Flush mount stereo

I ordered a stereo from Crutchfield and they supplied the kit to mount it. How ever the kit they supplied sticks out an 1" from the dash and I think it looks kinda tacky. I saw in another post that for a 96 cav use the Metra 99-3300 to get a flush install. But when I was installing the stereo it doesnt seem there would be enough depth to mount the stereo flush. There is some plastic in the back of the stereo slot, does that need to be trimmed away or will the stereo fit. Guess the best way is to buy the kit and find out, lol but assume someone has done this before. Also where is a good place to buy the kit? I found a few places that sell it cheap but have high shipping.

Fill out your profile. Do you have a Sunfire or Cavalier? What year?

in your dash there is a peice of plastic that should have a small rivet on it. that peice needs to be cut out whether you dremel it out or take a hacksaw to it. be carefull because the stereo wires are loomed pretty close to it. you want to get it as even to the bottom part as possible. after that just put the cage on the kit and bolt everything in. you will need to use screws to hold the kit on. if i remember correctly prior to take the factory radio out ther are no bolts holding it in, its just in there. as far as getting the part i would go to a local stereo shop, not BB or CC that way if you have any other questions they can answer them for you. After you install it you may experience that the left portion of the center dash wont go in all the way. just throw some dumdum putty on the inside and let it set for a bit

Its a 96 chevy cavalier. Why would the dash not sit right after I get it in that way? Does something of the dash connect down that far? I dont really like the look of the stereo sitting out and 1" but is that better than a dash that doesn't fit right?

the thing about the 3300 kit is if you dont cut the back enough it will put pressure on the bottom left half which usually results in the center dash not clipping in all the way

i personally dont think the 1" looks all that bad and you dont have to do any cutting or anything like that. because it is so close to the shifter some people dont like their radio sticking out like that. that kit should be a 99-4544 if i am not mistaken. and dont forget to get an antenna adapter its a 40-gm10 if you dont have one already
