So I saw that the EHQS series subs over at ElementalDesigns are $15 and $25...why so cheap? Under the description, it says:
The EHQS Development division was founded as a development sector of the company to serve large and medium sized companies. The EHQS 8 is a very efficient low cost alternative to many name brand products selling for much more. For Car, Home, and various DIY projects it's the perfect 'test speaker' for just about any enthusiast.
It's a 100W sub, and 8in, so I was thinking that with 2 I could get a decent bass sound that isn't too powerful and overwhelming, but when I read "it's the perfect 'test speaker'" I didn't know what to think. Anyone clue me in?
pm alex lindeman- i sure that he would have the answer for you, and if he can't answer the world may never know.
Last time I was out to see Alex he mentioned a line they have that's intended for OEM applications - I think these are the ones. Not the greatest sub out there, that's not their intention, but if you want something cheap to add a little bass to a stock system that's pretty much what they're meant for. Alex can give you some better info, but if you're going to invest, I'd recommend stepping into their KV series. You'll be glad you did.
The EHQS (pronounced "X") Series are drivers that have been developed for some OE companies that allowed us to also offer them to customers on our website. They are cheap becuase they dont have the highest quality parts, They dont have a whole lot of mechanical throw, use a fairly large box, and dont take a whole lot of power.
We put the EHQS 12" in a 2.6ft^3 tuned to 30hz in the back of our scion xB demo vehicle, and it kicked ass on a nine.2 bridged. It gets fairly loud and didnt sound half bad.
We found that they really like vented boxes.
Overall. just a good value for a girlfirends car, something to beat up, DIY HT towers, or an everyday setup.
Dont expect an absurd amount of output, but they dont sound bad by any means.
The EHQS 12 is comparable to say a JL 12w0 or original Image Dynamics ID 12", at a fraction of the cost.
The EHQS 8 is very similar to the JL 8w0, just less throw and less power handling.
Hope that helps a little bit.
Fun speakers to put in a large vented box and see what they can do.
We have a guy using 4 12" in an SPL configuration doing mid 140's without a whole lot of tuning.
And another doing 139.8 on 50 watts.

sweet i might have to grab a set for the mr2 since space is limited
Like I mentioned tho...it needs a fair amount of airspace.
If space is an issue, The 7kv.2 or 9kv.2 are a better option.
7kv.2 needs .3ft^3 and 9kv.2 is .35ft^3.
While the EHQS8 needs .75ft^3.

I may end up picking up a few for my HT boxes then, I'll be building a set later this year!
