looking to build a box for 8 12" subs and i want to build it so that four are facing up and four are facing down kinda like a crx style box but the bottom one being 7" and top being 7" with 3" of space between the two boxes and have the ports go out the back, but not sure if that is possible, any suggestions? I will either be running JL Audio 12W3v3 or JL Audio 12W3v2 and running them off 2 JLAudio 1000/1, thanks for help or suggestions

Bigger isn't always better. You're going to have an awful tough time getting it in the trunk - you have to think about depth of the subs and all kinds of other good stuff, not to mention box size. Another thing, I see you wanna run w3's, they're not a fantastic sub for spl. Why not do 2 or 4 better subs? You can see we get stupid with 2 or 4 drivers, and get stupid loud.

If I have this straight, you're planning some form of pseudo-clamshell right?
Are you planning on fitting all of that into the trunk? Airspace will be your biggest issue (well, space in general). The most we can get out of our trunks is ~8cuft gross, so after port and driver displacement you'll be lucky to have 0.5-0.7cuft per sub (if that). I wouldn't even go that low sealed with those subs. You'd be hard-pressed with space to put 8-12s in a traditional wall setup in our cars.

I'm with Lanman - go with 2 or 4 good drivers. Far easier, and chances are excellent that you'll be louder.

ok so how bout i do 4 subs then, but im stayin JLAudio but not going to bother with the W7 as they are ridiculouslly over priced here in canada, W6 is still too much, that is why I opted for W3,s but if you can think of a better jl model then cool, as for fitting it all in the trunk, that isnt a necessity(sp) as I have cut those corner braces out a long time ago to fit a 15" XXX box in but thats a different story, so now I will be ok to run 4 subs any more suggestion?

I have 4 subs, 8.2 cubic foot box, but mine extends out of the trunk, so my backseat area is useless.

With a square box that just fits through a trimmed back seat opening, going to the very end of the trunk, you'll be lucky to get 1.5cuft net per sub if you run 4 in a trunk setup. And that all depends on how much port you decide to go with.
With 4-12s, the only way I can see it working well in a trunk is to go CRX-style, with all 4 facing up, and ports firing in whichever direction that gets you the best results. Some people have had good results with that box design in our cars, but the bigger the box the worse the airflow when it comes to SPL in a trunk.
Whichever way you decide to build, make sure the power is absolutely clean or those subs will not last long.

well the backseat is open to be used cause there is no seat or panels from the last install lol, so what jl subs other than w7 or w6 should i use?

I don't think that you'll get alot of help trying to use pure SQ subs for an SPL setup, especially when most people on this forum hate JL. Do you already have both 1000/1s? Four W3s off one 1000/1 would be great for daily; giving them 500wrms each for anything but burps is asking for trouble.
If you are dead set on running 2-1000/1s, you would be much better off finding 2 used W7s. I love JL and used to run W6s, but W3/W6s were not made for high-power or SPL. Just a friendly bit of advice.

I appreciate it your advice, I currently have one jl 1000/1 if I were gonna run four subs 12", what would be some suggestions for spl/daily, not really expensive ones either thanks again

Cheap subs don't usually equal wholesome goodness. Check out lanzar optidrive 1234d's - you could run 4 of them, 2 parallel, 2 parallel then series to give a 2 ohm final load for that amp and it'll boom, plus they're made for small boxes. Heck I would prolly give you my box for a donation seeing as i'm going to be building a new one here soon, it'll be perfect for the subs.

If you are trying to do it from the trunk then good luck. you may want to seal it off and try to fire them all forward. glass the tire well into your box and go from there. you are gonna be hard pressed anyways. your best bet may to do a half wall or a full wall. full wall will get you the airspace for 8 12s. and give you some of your trunk at least

you can make it loud and sound good, if you want to use the trunk then go with 4 sub's. if you want to run 8 then go with a wall or half wall in the back seat and you can go into the trunk also to get more space.

you need about 14 cubes to run 8 ported (jl specs) you can do all 8 in the back seat in the half wall and the whole trunk and that will be right around 14, or do a full wall and use the trunk for the amps.

From experience, SLOT ported subs in fewer numbers will work best for your.

If you ran 3 JLW3V2D4's in a Series Parrellel configuration equaling 2.6ohm load on that 1000/1 and either set your gain using JL's Manual or a O-Scope you'll be all set.

well here are my final three choices,

1. 4- 12" of some type of sub not sure yet??

2. 2- 15" tsunamis

3. 1- 18" solox

18" subs are not easy at all to incorporate into a j-body.
I ran an 18" CV Stroker in my cavalier for about a year before taking it out. Our trunks lack the airspace for something like that to work the way it should. On top of that, the only 2 ways it will fit is to either angle it back to get the box through the 17" high trunk opening (and if a solo-x has a longer mounting depth than my stroker it will NOT work that way) or fire it upwards.

From personal experience, unless you're going with a wall or plan on cutting alot of sheet metal, stick to 12s or 15s. MUCH easier to get loud than an 18 in our cars (without a wall anyway)

theres nothing wrong with a wall it is actually alot of fun and the rearview is overrated. you just learn to pay attention to your surroundings more and don't bob and weave through traffic as much. it took me about a week to get used to using the side mirrors and then it was ok.
trust me the first time you fire that thing up you are gonna about ish your pants. I still remember it like it was just the other day. lol .

the only thing bothering me about doing a wall is the saggin effect in the rear my car is very low to begin with and i never have people in the back do to the way it looks when it sags lol..I might just put the stock suspension back in the rear to help with that then lol, so with those subs i had mentioned what do you guys think i should pick to do it? for now im gonna stay with the one jl 1000/1 but will be adding another sometime through the summer...thanks so dar for all the helpful knowledge and info btw

I roll with 4 12's, I like it, everyone else will have their opinion. Go with what YOU want to do, as long as it's not junk.

heres the best part of the wall. if you stay in the backseat area the sag is minimal. all weight is forward of the rear wheels. now when you start adding batts put them right over the wheels. get everything as far forward as you can and the sag wont be noticeable.
