Need Help!

Ok I'll start from the begining. I installed my new HU in my car. After installing my new HU my Cluster/HVAC lights no longer come on. I replaced the switch and it still did not fix my problem. This morning I decided I wanted to take my HU out and check my wireing and sure enough my illumination wire was not hooked up to anything. I never hooked this wire up because everybody told me that it was not needed. I decided to put some power to my illumination wire and sure enough my cluster/hvac lights came on. But I can't hook the wire up to a constant source of power. Because the will stay on. So now I don't know why none of the wires behind my stereo won't properly work with my cluster/hvac lights. For temp I ran a wire from the illumination wire to my fuse box. I can now turn the cluster/hvac lights on with my switch like normal but I can't adjust the brightness at all. So I know it is not hooked up right. Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem could be? I'm using a wireing harness for my HU instead of cutting the stock wireing harness. And before I took my HU out all my lights worked. They stopped working ever since I re-installed the same HU back into the car. I need help ASAP because my new guage cluster arrives today and it would be nice to have proper lighting for it.

In the planning stage for an all American TRD Cavalier.

Sounds like a wire is cut somewhere or of course you're not getting power to it. Start with a multimeter and check around, see where the power loss is.
