Adding 12v power for Sirius
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:32 AM
I have a 95 Cav and want to add a 12v power recptacle to run my sirius system. I would prefer this to switch off when the car does. Have already left it on once and killed the battery. What power wire would be the best to attach this to. From what I read the wiper seems to be the choice of most, but in doing this will the unit only work with the car full started or will it be powered with the key in ACC position? Any help would be great.

Turn the key to ACC & check to see if your windshield wipers work.....
If yes- then that fuse will work fine...
If not, then maybe you want to find a different fuse to use if you want it to work on ACC.

Just go behind the radio and get the ACC wire, or get it from the ignition switch. Or there are 100 other places to get it. Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but those are the best two. Also, make sure to use a fuse if the circuit does not have one.

What color is the ACC wire behind the radio? I figured that is what I needed to do, I was just checking to see what anyone else may have done. There is always a better way to install something than the one you choose, Just thought someone might have a good idea.

Well....

If you have an aftermarket radio- the IGN wire would be Red... I dont know what color it is on the factory wires off the top of my head...

However- if you're still using a factory radio, It would be a pain in the ass to pull it out just for an ign. source...Waste of time.

ALSO_ keep in mind that alot of the newer sirius radios are only 5 volts.. So- if you wish to hardwire them, you would need to keep the cigarette lighter plug that comes with it..

Ya gotta buy a pigtail to keep the plug.

Yeah I still have the factory radio. I didn't even think to check the voltage of the Sirius unit. Thanks for letting me know that. I just assumed it was 12v. Originally I planed on adding a second Lighter port, but would like it to turn off with the car. Just finding a good hookup point is the only problem I see with it. Wonder why they didn't make the cigarette port switching on these cars. Oh well guess I will just have to find something to use and find somewhere out of the way to mount another lighter port.

Directechs doesn't have the audio color for your car, but you check it by using a meter. Ground out the black probe and stick the red probe into the pin hole until you find a wire that shows 12V when the car is turned on and 0V when the car is shut off. If you check on the sirius cig plug it will say 12V or 5V. If you have a 5V plug you can take it apart. You will see two metal tabs (hard to describe) and the fuse. The fuse end is the 5V + side and the metal tabs are the ground. You can solder wires to them and tape it up, it will work just as well.

Most stock units do not have have a remote turn-on wire unless that vehicle has an amp, which a 96 cavalier does not.

Take off the shroud around your steering colum, tap into the Pink wire. It is 12awg in size I believe. Than ground it to the factory metal supports under the dash. That way it will only turn on when you have the key on.

Also if a small 12v accessory is killing your battery from being left on too long, you might wanna get a new battery.
