Which amp to pick?
Tuesday, January 09, 2007 6:04 PM
Ok, so my BRAND NEW amp fried. Never buy Power Acoustik amps. Now I need a new one. I was looking at a few different amps to choose from. I will have this amp powering 2 Kicker Comp VR 12 Dual 2ohm subs on a 2ohm load.

Prices from least to highest:

SPL DK2-2000
Kole Audio KX2-1920
Soundstream XTA880.2
Rockford Fosgate Punch P10002

I have never used any of these brands, let me know which one would work best. I am looking to do around 400watts rms to each channle. If you know of any other amps that would work good for me let me know. I am in the price range of about $300 max.

I love how you tell everyone not to buy a product, when the cause of the product not working was user error.

zomg don't buy something because YOU can't hook it up right!

In the past. I have owned a few power acoustik amplifiers, and while they arent the cleanest sounding, and strongest built. If you can get one for pretty cheap, they are an ok budget amplifier, but alot of other options, with better warranty and better built.

One, I found out I hooked it up worng AFTER I made that first post
two, I restated my statement due to RedlineZ's question... so yes, I may have said not to buy something but I corrected it.... so chill.

Also, would this be the worng wiring anyways:

ch1 VC1 VC2
(+) --------------(+)(sub 1)(-)-----------wired
(-) ---------------(-)( )(+)-----------together

ch2 VC1 VC2
(+) --------------(+)(sub 2)(-)----------wired
(-) -------------- (-)( )(+)---------together

I know thats a bad diagram, basicly I had the (-) and (+) of Ch1 running to the (-) & (+) of Sub1's right VC and the other VC connted together and Ch2 done the same way on the other sub. That would present a 2ohm load on each sub and the amp correct? If so... then yes, the amp burned up because of the amp, not my hookup. Otherwire, if that is the worng hookup, then yes it was my fault.

Now, anyone (thanks Alex) care to help me here? This is my new delima:

I have DVC 2ohm subs. 400rms a peace. I want to get as much power from them as possibal. What would be my best bet?

I have been told that 1 mono amp is what I need, some say 2 mono amps (one per sub), and others say I need a 2ch amp.... who is right? I want a 2ch amp perferably, However someone told me that hooking up DVC subs on a 2ch amp will fry the amp because the ohm load is worng... even tho I have my subs wired in series on a 2ohm load?

Therefore, should I hook up 1 mono amp per sub, or can I buy a 2ch amp and run the subs at 2ohms?

And, whats yalls opinon on HIfonics amps? If I can use a 2ch amp (the PA one burned up) I want to use a Hifonics ZXi 1006

Ok, I talked to a guy at JL Audio about what I need. He told me that in order to get near 400watts rms from each speaker I need a 800watt rms mono amp. He said that hooking up a 400watt rms mono amp to 2 speakers splits the power, therefore I need an 800watt rms amp.

Does this sound right? If it is... then how about a Hifonics BXi 1206D amp? Anyone ever used Hifonics or know if they are a good brand? All the reviews I have seen say they are good.

Go with either or, they'll both work, and quit bumpin stuff. When we get to it, we get to it.

Thanks for the help, I think I am going to go with the Alpine amp. Seems like it has a lot of good fetures for the price, and I have never had a problem with my Alpine MRP-450 for over a year.
