how do i get an elec. trunk popper to work...
Saturday, December 02, 2006 7:58 AM
i am just wondering... did any of the older (95-98) 3rd gen cav's come with an electronic trunk release button under the dash? if so... what would i have to do to get one to work on my 98z that didnt come with one stock?
i know that i could get the manual cable one to work... (my car didnt come with this either) but id rather have the electric one.

if the older ones didnt, i know the newer (00+) did come with it... is there any way to get it work on my car?
if not, is there any way i could hard wire it to the trunk release?

if your wondering why im doing this...im sick and tired of having to either get out and use the damn key or use the kep fob to pop the trunk-i know that sounds like im lazy, but its just annoying thats all... and im into getting more options for my car (thats just me) id like to get as many options as i can for my car. and the best way i can see to get more that acctually CAME with a cavalier stock.

thanks

If u have keyless entry with trunk pop that should be fairly easy.. just splice into the wires that trigger the trunk release.. u dont even need a electric trunk release.. just a switch and wires so when u press teh switch it sends current to the release.. all u would be doing is bypassing the key fob controller..

i could be wrong tho.. thats just a quick suggestion i just came up with on how i think u could make it work..

yeah, basically i want it to look stock, with the stock button under the driver side dash. want it to work pretty much like stock to, even with the lockout to where u cant pop it while the car is in drive etc. but if i cant do it that way, oh well.

i checked into the search for this and acctually found a ton of info, just none that would substantially help me.

if someone could post up a pic of where the button is located stock that would rule.

It was the 02+ that came with the button under the dash. It's a low voltage switch that sends a signal to the BCM... then the BCM pops it for you. You can't just use the tiny wires on the switch to pop it.. you'll fry the wiring.

BUT... if you got the switch from a donor car... and hooked up a relay to it... with power and then the output from the relay to the trunk popper... it would be no problem to hook up

Just the time to run the wiring... which, if you're too lazy to push the button on the keyfob...

ya I have it on mine, and I hate it, probably 75% of the time I turn the car on, it pops the trunk so I usually leave my car door open, turn my car on, then go outside to close the trunk. pain in the ass.

im just annoyed with how i cant pop the trunk with my car running. when the engine is one i cant push the button on my key fob. so i have to turn my car off, pop the trunk with the fob or unlock it with the key for the trunk to open. if i add another switch with a seperate relay, i should be able to by-pass all the safety, correct? if not could i install a manual cable lever?

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

hmm, ok...seeing as how i do not have the BCM, this is the only way i guess i cant get it to work lol.

any idea on where i could get a relay that would work? i know absolutly nothing about relays, so treat me as a totally know-nothing noobie.

ive seen the stock switch on ebay before, like $10 if i remember correctly.

thanks lenko, your knowledge, as always... is top notch.

Go to Radio shack and get a Momentary button switch (i think thats what its called...its a push button switch) and run three wires... one ground, one positive, and one sender and u wire the positive (splice it with any exisiting powered wirings) and then ground it (either wire it with another grounded wire or just bolt it down to ur chassis...), and then wire the sending wire all the way to the back to ur trunk lid and splice the sending wire to the trunk opener wire in the back. Worked like a charm for me.

Confused...? Email me.

confused about your switch and wiring no... confused about getting the STOCK 02+ trunk popper button to work-yes.

all i really need to know is where to find the relay, and which one to get. then a diagram of how to wire it, or at least a run through. i am good at wiring etc myself... but when it comes to getting stuff like this to work (ie using a relay) im a retard.

i really dont understand what a relay does... does it just "Relay" the signal, or amp it, or what?

thanks.

a relay uses a 'signal' to open the path for electricity to flow...
