stereo hookup problem
Thursday, December 21, 2006 2:03 PM
ok so im hooking my alpine deck up from my car to my wifes car

i hooked it up correctly i think

anyways it works great, till i take the key out of the ignition, when i put it back in the ignition i have to re-set all the settings. it works fine if i leave the key in the ignition and turn the car back on, just not when i take the key out

any tips?

Did you hook the accessory wire from the deck to the correct wire because if its not then it will cause the deck to lose the memory sometimes should just have a look into that....

yeah its on the right wire, but the thing is it only looses memory when i take the key out of the ignition

when the car is off, but the key is in, it works fine, just when the key is out

Might be a problem with the wire in the ignition try hooking it up to a different accessory in the car and see what happens then...

well everything else works, so why would it be the ignition

hey man never said that it was the ignition for sure it was just a suggestion that you could try was changing it to something else because it seems to work fine till you take the key out or you could try and disconnect he harness from the deck and plug it back in that works sometimes to just resets the power in it....

The constant power is what controls the presets, clock, etc. Check your fuses.

but if i connect the constant power, then the unit is on all the tiem

so i take it would be the radio fuse that i would connect the power wire too then?

that would give me my memory and still give me power too?

There should be two separate wires. One for ACC, which you would tap into the ignition. One for the BATT, which would be always on, and would be a straight connection to the battery.

yeah but which one would give me my memory?

The one that goes straight to the battery will hold all of your info, like the time and stuff.

What they mean is theres one that is constant 12 volt power and one that is accesorrie the one thats accesorry goes to ignition or whatever else comes on when u turn the key on the other one has to have constant 12 volt power or your deck will not hold the memory at all..because it will clear each time the key is removed...

If your stereo wires are standard, your accessory(ignition) wire will be red. Your constant 12v (batt+, your preset and clock memory) will be yellow. If you're using a wiring harness, it should be plug and play (in a 98?), but if you're wiring everything individually, your constant 12v(yellow) will be connected to orange/black in the car side i believe, and your accessory(red) will be connected to yellow in the car side.

You can, and have to, connect both your ignition and constant wires in order for your cd player to work normally. If you hook up both wires correctly, the unit will not only turn off when you turn off the key, but it will still keep all your presets while it is off (as long as your wiring and battery are good).

i know what your saying, and this is not the first time i have installed a stereo, but its the first time i have run into this problem

im using the wire harness, I have a red comming out of the car,(ignition), a yellow (constant 12v) and on the back of the deck i have a yellow (battery lead) and an Red (ignition

i have the battery lead, and the 2 ignition wires all connected.. it works great until i take the key out of the ignition.

if i connect the constant 12v to anything, it will stay on no matter the car is on or not

what i dont get is why the thing loses memory when the key is out of the ignition

The only reason it would do that is if you're trying to keep the memory on the ACC power.

Try tapping into the battery somewhere else.

like running the memory wire from the deck right to the batterY?

ok ill try that thanks

so if you hook the yellow wire coming out of the cd player to a constant power source (such as what should be on the yellow wire in the car side harness) the unit stays on all the time? there should be a red that goes to a red, and a yellow that goes to a yellow. If after doing that, the unit stays on even when you turn the car off, then you have the wires backwards it sounds... still an odd problem from the way i'm understanding it...

Hooking the memory wire straight to something that you know has a constant 12v, and hooking the acc (ignition) wire to something that you know has power only when the ignition is on will no doubt solve the problem... do you have a multimeter or something of the like?

all i can say is Yellow goes to constant 12V all the time. and red is your ACC. wire. if those are hooked up correctly it should work fine. if not then you have a bad cd player or something. can you take a pik of what all you have hooked up???
