I've been toying with the idea of getting an Elemental Designs setup, but my discount just started at Best Buy and I'm tempted to go with this:
Alpine MRP-M650 - 400W RMSx1 @ 4 ohms, 600W @ 2 ohms
Alpine SWR-1042D - 200-500W Peak power handling
I only want 1 10" sub, I don't want anything more. The whole setup will run me $250 with wires, so I'm REALLY tempted. Any reason why I shouldn't?
well you better make sure you give the sub the exact power of 500, i had a 12" type-r and the alpine 400 watt class d amp, and i've blown 5 different type-r's, when i asked best buy they said i was under powering it and said it needed exatly 500 watts rms
k5 ftmfw!!
Yes, always go by the rms power of the amp and sub, never max.

Hmm. Old R's or new R's?? There's people pushing like 800ish and they do fine. Thats kinda wierd.
But yes, that amp is made for that sub and I'm an alpine whore so of course I say get it.

Underpowering won't blow a sub, overpowering it will, I know that much.

That's untrue. You can't "underpower" a sub. Wtf you think happens when you turn the volume down?... You were probably clipping the @!#$ out of it. Best Buy employee's are generally not too smart when it comes to these things....
And as for the original poster, I'd say go for it!

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

If you want to really get down to it, neither under powering or over powering will.

I'm going to buy it sometime next Spring. Some of the installers at my store are certified by some car audio certification place, I don't know where, but I can find out if anyone is interested. There are only 4 certified installers in the DFW area and my store has 2 of them. It's on Collins and I-30 in Arlington.

True. Overpowering a sub to the point where the heat created is greater than the heat dissipated, THEN you have damage.

dont go back to that best buy again, they are idiots. go to a qualified shop and have them look at your setup. as said i'd bet your sending a clipped signal to your subs causing them to go boom boom.
