Box for my new subs
Sunday, December 03, 2006 5:20 PM
Ok, I just bought 2 Kicker Comp VR dual 2 ohm subs. I do not have a box that meets their spificatins yet, but I plan to soon.

Right now I have it in a prefab dual 12" box (i know i know). It sounds horibal. It sounds worse than my $50 pinoeer subs from walmart I bought a long time ago, in the same box. I have a Alpine MRP-450 amp running them on a 2 ohm load. 400rms to each speaker.

My question is this: Could the box be the source of my problem? I have seen that ported boxes are recommended for these subs. Could anyone with these subs let me know what kind of box you have and where you got it from. Any links to a good palce to buy some boxes would be nice.

Also, anyone know where I can buy a Kicker Livin Loud dual 12 box for these? I have seen tons with the box and subs, but I want just the box.

Btw, I was thinking about buying the QLogic vented box that Cardomain recommends for the sub...
Qlogic Vented dual 12

Sub is almost definately the problem. Try plugging one of the ports and see if the sound is better. That's about your only option until you can buy or build a new box.

Definitely double check your wiring.

I am almost positive I have it right... the amp is mono and I have it ona 2ohm load wired in series. postive and negitave of one coil to the box terminal and then to the amp for each sub, and a the positive and negitave of the other coil connected together. I have the + and - wire connected on that coil... like this:

-------------- - + and - wire
| |
+ -
Sub
+ -
| |
| |
| ------------------------- to amp
-------------------------------------- to amp

I have it like that for each sub.

I bought a new box. I got a ported box with all the specs needed for these speakers... OMG ! that was the problem

They hit very hard now compared to the sealed box. I paid $105.93 for this box and it is even a **perfect** fit in my cav's trunk... I have it at the front near the back seat and it fits from wall to wall perfectly.

Now then, I was talking to a guy at the shop and he recommended I buy a better amp. I have a Alpine MRP-450 amp. It is mono, pushing 400watts rms/2 ohm and that is how it is hooked up. It is hooked up to 2 subs that handle 400rms each (kicker comp VR 12s). The guy told me that by hooking up both subs to it it lowers the power being sent to both subs. That I need a 600rms-700rms amp hooked up to them.... Is this true? I dont want to do anything without asking yall. So what kind of amp would you recommend for these? I was looking at a Alpine MRD -M605

You CAN NOT underpower a sub, he's just trying to sell something to you by using misinformation. Misinformation most people believe and get suckered into.

I'm guessing each kicker is 4 ohms then? If they are both 2 ohms it's possible that you have them hooked up in 1ohm or 4ohm. Just checking.

Otherwise, the only downside to not getting a bigger amp is that it won't be as loud, but just make sure you really NEED more power before you make a decision.

hey man i wouldnt recomend the alpine mrd-m605 if the subs are 2 ohm then you will be feeding them 150 watts rms each because the amp is running 300 rms at 4 ohms and its a mono amp so if u wire them up they will each be taking 2 ohms which will be drawing 150 rms each...i have an mtx mxa6001 wired to mine dual 4 ohm im running 300 watts rms to each subs sounds mint...

They are dual 2 ohm.... Chris, Amps put out more power at 2 ohms I belive. That alpine is 600rms x1 chan. Well, I have the money to get a better amp so I belive I will, what would yall suggest for these? Dual 2 ohm and I have them hooked up ona 2 ohm load

Ok, got a new things going on. Everytime I turn my headunit up to around 50 my subs cut out. I turn the headunit off and back on and they work. I had a friend who knows more about amps help me tune it. When the Gain is turned barely past default settings and the headunit is on 45-50 they cut, gain down to normal and no problme 50+. Im guessing my amp is curring out due to to much power?

So, think I need a better amp now? hehe

As in, the middle setting, not neg or pos gain... just normal in the center of the dial

You're probably clipping and the amp is going into protection mode.

Go to the link I posted and follow the guide.

^ Werd. There's not such thing as "default", gains are there to be adjusted to match your preout voltage.

I will do that as soon as I get some free time and a multimeter. I have this amp powering them ona 2ohm load, is it enough? Alpine-MRP450

Also, You have these same subs, right Bradsk88? IF so, what amp do you have on them?

I'm running a Panasonic 4 channel amp. Currently using 2 channels bridged to send 190W RMS @ 4ohms to a single sub. I'll be adding the second sub this summer.

Doesn't really matter what brand you use and there's no such thing as 'too little power.' Don't worry about it.
