Ok im installin 3 a pillar gauges tomorrow or whenever i get time. I need a Switched 12V that can handel all 3 gauges and i also need a "headlamp other 12v source" ,whatever that is (can someone tell me), for 2 of them that is near the a pillar. I've searched and i found like so many differnt answers, i found one that siad the thick pink wire in the steerin column, but was told that wouldn't be a good idea cuz of volts goin throw that wire, then one post said one of the 2 thick red wires, another a orange wire, then some said the wiper relay fuse but i dont like piggy backin stuff liek that. Any help would nice. Thanks

well heres the proper thing to do....use the wiper fuse or the switched 12v in the column...then use a relay to allow your own power to the gauges.
the headlamp thing is probably the illumination wire/parking lights.....no idea/brown
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
ok that sounds good now lol how would i wire up the relay and witch is the switch 12v in the column? i looked on bulldogsecurity and i didn't see any listed for switched 12v.

Use the one in the stereo harness. Its switched.
Also can use the illumination wire in the same harness.
from the12volt.com
1998 Pontiac Sunfire Stereo Information
Constant 12V+ -- Orange
Switched 12V+ -- Yellow
Ground -- Black
Illumination -- Gray
Dimmer -- Brown
Antenna Trigger -- Pink
For relay wiring:

The above is for fog lights, but if you switch the fusebox illustration with whatever wire you are tapping from (forget the switch in the diagram), and the foglights for the gauges, its all the same. Just tell the autoparts guy at the desk that you need a DRL relay for your car. Its a 5 pin Bosch style.
alright cool ill give it a shot tomorrow maybe i can get it to work out for me. i'm kinda good at wiring if i sit down and study but not the best and get confused easily if i dont pay attention lol

ok so i modified that fog light drawing to what i think needs to be done or what im gettin u guys said i should do tell me if this is right or not.

That's correct. Or in your steering column grab the orange wire and tap off of that with a relay.
all cool this helps alot lol. my only other question is why would the gauges need an illumination wire? Their tinted so wouldn't they need to be on all the time? that way i can read them durin the day... If i wanted them to be lite all the time when the cars one could i just wire them in with the switched wire?

The illumination wire dims the gauges a little bit at night so they are not overbearingly bright (at least that's what my digital gauges do)
i plan on using the illumination wire from my radio harness for my gauge pod lighting...and i see no reason why it wouldnt work, but i havent actually DONE it yet.

ok 2 more questions on this subject
If i have an after market stero in the car i dont need the lightin wire in the radio harness right? i can just cut and splice together the gray and wire for the gauges right?
Also what is the wire color for the wiper fuse wire behind the fuse panel?

If you have non-digital (ie Autometer), it will work perfectly

Unless your aftermarket stereo has a dimming feature... if not, then go ahead and splice away

Yellow, I believe

Ok so after being lazy for a month i finaly went to install the gauges and i onyl have one problem. How the hell do i get to the back of the fuse panel to get to the yellow wire???? i found the fuse in the panel (25 white fuse) but when i look undr the dash i cant see the wires and i cant see anyway to take the fuse panel out
Ok so i mounted the relay under the dash but screwin it fast with a self tapping screw. Grounded the wire to a but on the steering column then routed my wire from the relay to the stero harness and striped alittle bit of the yellow wire that was labeled batt./mem the i striped the relay wire and went to touch the yellow wire and something clicked?? did it again and it clicked again. something near the brake pebal side of the floor keeps clickin when i touch the 2 wires together. only does it clicks once tho. WTF is it now? is this normal?
Undo the ground on the relay, touch the wires together... if it makes that sound still, you have a wire crossed in your relay setup. Double check your wires to make sure the pins have the right wires attached.
If it doesn't make that sound, find a new ground spot (the OBD2 port works as well)
thats the thing the ground wire is the only wire hooked up right now. i grounded the relay and thats the only wire i hooked up. i found that when i touch any of the wires to anything metal it makes a little, little click sound but when i touch the switch wires together its a big click lol
That could be the relay engaging. Take the ground off, hook up the rest of the wires and then reground it.
alright tomorrow i'll have at it again
question: im installing a cig lighter. and i want a 12 v source that only runs when the key is in acc or on.... what should i use??? that same wires off of the radio harness or what. i dont need illumination or anything just a switched 12v source.
thanks

You can use that wire, but for safety, I'd use a relay.
where do i get a relay from??? and how much and what kind
Auto parts store, ask for either a cooling fan relay for a 1990 Chev Cavalier (should be a 5 pin relay) or a DRL relay for a 1997 Cav/Sunfire (same relay as the cooling fan one)... probably $5 or so. If they have Bosch, get one of those. Really any 4 or 5 pin relay will work.
Also in the ricer aisle, they have fog light wiring kits, relays are there on the rack next to them. About the same price.
they just sell the relays in the wiring isle too. Just pick up a Bosch 4-5 pin relay. The package says "HELP!" in big white letters with an orange background, guessin the name of the company is "help".
Well just for anyone else lookin at these instructions and wiring stuff. My radio harness had 2 yellow wires in it. one was memory wire and the other is the switched 12v or as i had it on mine the remote wire for the amp.
Only one more problem i have no gray wire in my harness. I have an orange wire that says dimmer on it but no gray wire. what other wires should i look for?

Aftermarket harness (ie harness adaptor) or factory?
I'll put the wiring colors for the factory harness up when I get home from work.
