well I took mine apart for a little project and I found It has a little magnet strip (like the ones that come in dvds and make the alarm go off when you've stolen one). Well I was wondering what that does? is it important to the radar detector?
Getting "better built" for the '08...
ok, first, radar detectors DO NOTHING. NOTHING. if it detects it, that means the cop already has you. your screwed. so what good does it do.
and 2nd off...it doesent detect everything, no matter how much you spend, no matter what a salesperson tells you. dont even bother.
police will tell you this. in fact, they'll even prove it. i had a sherriff prove it to me with my 200 dollar top of the line radar detector cuz he found out he went to college with my dad, and decided to be nice to me. (thank god).
he said they also look for those...and they look for reasons to pull you over.
so do yourself a favor, and get rid of the thing.

Top of the line....$200? I don't think so. That wouldn't even get you something middle of the line unless you bought it used. Doesn't detect anything? Did you even have yours plugged in? Even a crappy detector will detect most forms of radar (although at greatly reduced range).
You obviously haven't experienced the greatness of a truly good radar detector, such as a high-end Valentine, Bel or Excort. A good radar detector will pick up a cop long before he's close enough to tag you (and likely long before he/she even knows you're even on the road). A cop has to be close to get a lock and be certain that it's your vehicle which is speeding. I can pick up cops on the highway a full 5km away on flat highway with my Escort 8500, and at least a mile away in hilly areas. That's more than enough time to react. The only way a cop can nail me(provided that I'm over the speed limit) is with laser/instant-on or if they sneek up on me and pace me. If he's just driving down the road with his radar switched on, a good detector will let you know LONG in advance. If they're using laser, your screwed unless they try and laser someone ahead of you and your detector picks it up (which my 8500 has done on several occassions).
You don't have to believe me. Type in 'radar detector' into google and read some of the tests and reviews (many of which were done by police/former police).
Here's an example:
http://www.radarbusters.com/default.asp
Good detectors work, and work VERY well.
I don't know what kind of police you have down there (maybe they just use laser, or pace you?), but the fact is a good radar detector ABSOLUTELY works.

Um yeah....where do you get your info one?
200 dollars isnt top of the line
Radar detectors do work
My old one i bought for 120 bucks worked awesome
Trust me, i have um one speeding ticket, before i got a radar, from 4 years ago...
Theres a PD somewhere that recently did a test, and the only thing that didnt work, was that spray people use to beat redlight cameras...Ill have to look for the article...

WTF!? It doesn't detect ANYTHING? How can you justify that statement? I can tell you they work. Mine saves my @ss weekly. Top of the line $200? My passport 8500 x2 cost $350. I'm sick of everyone getting all crabby about radar detectors. They're not illegal in most states, if you don't want one don't buy one.
Back on topic... I have no idea what that thing is for
Sold 6/30/06.
do you have a pic of the insides.....if so i could probably figure it out
and for the radar detectors don't detect........then what do they do? because mine (valentine V1) certanly tells me the number of threats, the direction of the threat and the strenght of the threat, and most times.......you guessed it......theres a cop with a radar gun.....so obviously its doing something.
since ive had it it has paid for itself many times over, the only time ive been stopped speeding the cop had one of the new stalker radar guns that are instant on and i was the only car around. so yeah, radar detectors do detect and they do work........i don't feel like going into the theory of radar and radar detection, but trust me.....they work, and they work well
oh and 200 bucks is hardley even middle of the line, top of the line will set you back 350-400 bucks

maybe it is for what you said if some one takes it out of the box in the store the alarm will go off ....or this is going off on a limb here if the cop is searching your car for a radar detector maybe he has a scanner and he can find it that way? i have no idea thats just my guess but i think if you take it out then its not going to do anything

Some states it is illegal to had a detector. I know CT and NYC it is illegal. When I take the Cross Bronx sometimes those highway harzard signs blink: "..it is unlawful in the state of NY to have a radar detector. Please turn it off etc. etc. 200+ fine blah blah..." Something along the lines of that. Some states it is legal to have them.
Thats why some detectors come with V2 and other types of "ghost" codes because some squad cars are set up to also detect radar detectors.
Its all good tho I still have one though.

"Are radar detectors legal?
Yes! Radar detectors are completely legal to use in non-commercial vehicles in 49 states. Virginia and Washington DC are the only places in the United States that currently ban radar detectors. Radar detector use in commercial vehicles has been prohibited in the U.S. since 1995 and radar detectors are also illegal in most Canadian provinces. We do not track detector regulations in other countries."

Not saying you're wrong I have just never heard of them being illegal in CT or NYC.

Well I just went on a little search. CT cancelled the law in 1998, which is good to hear. NY moved the law to only commercial vehicles in 2002. The law does say it is legal to use radar detectors. But it is always left up to interpretation. Lets face it most Cops will always assume what your radar detector is for. If it is found they can write a ticket for "obstructed windshield view" if they see it hanging from the windshield.
But just like the Tint Laws there are always conflicting statements. This site I found:
Radar Detector Prohibition
It says that the law can be interpreted in saying that it is legal to purchase, but not actually use a detector.
I'm not saying anything though, I have a detector and haven't gotten in trouble. But I have had friends who have gotten "bull" tickets for their radars. So like tinting, its up to the cops and up to what you are doing before you get pulled over.
actually laser and radar jammers are illegal according to the FCC. theyre illegal because they are intended to interfere with electronics, and they are a radar emitter, which is illegal to operate without a licence unless your a civil servant...ie police
so while the state govt may ok them, the FCC could have an issue with it

They're illegal in Ontario
thats right in most parts in canada you cant not have one they remind you when crossing over from the states
Justin Sousa wrote:They're illegal in Ontario
This I know all too well. On one of my cross-Canada trips I had my Whistler detector confiscated and given a $175 fine for possessing one just outside of Nipigon (ghost car). Oh well, it had more than paid for itself and the fine at that point. My Escort is much better anyway
As far as I know, BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan are the only Canadian provinces where detectors are legal to use. I also believe that laser jammers are also legal in those provinces, unless things have changed in the past year or two.

Ive got a Bel Radar 360 direction dector, Ive had it for about 3 years. Never got a speeding ticket with it, I did get a ticket without having it turned on. Some people say they dont work, Ive been pretty damn lucky with it.
