big power drain!!!
Saturday, November 11, 2006 6:01 PM
the amplifer i have in my car is drawing soooo much from my charging system. i have seen a lot of people on here say they dont have a problem running heavy load on their stock charging system but i am losing about 250 rpms at idle when theres a hard bass hit at about 3/4 volume. (as loud as ill go so i dont damage anything with the distortion) any body else run into this?? im upgrading my alternator and big three hoping that will help. maybe someone has had this problem and can tellme what helped most. thanks

I have this problem and a yellow top and big 3 are in my near future. I'm sure it will help though

If you're running that volfenhagen amp, i bet you don't have nearly as big of a current draw like me or wysiwig --- one, that amp is inefficient, two, it's not pushing out 1200 watts. Sure you have the gains set right?

damn no love for me

One Orion 2500 > 4 volfenhagen. If you wanna hear about power drain, ask nate about his new project Do the big 3, get a better amp, and let me know how things go.

dont worry i know that the volfenhag is inefficient but it was cheap and i am poor. i dont really need to go bigger with the audio so im not planning on getting a new amp till this one quits. then ill get a bettter one. big 3 is in the near future and looking into better alternator. just wondering what gave others the most results? thanks

new project will come together better if the girlfriend listens for christmas.

yo u got a capacitor in ur sterio? cuz for every 1000 watts ur sapose to have a cap and if u do fallow that rule u wont have any problems if u have the caps charged right ?

that i can promis u most of the ppl that put cars together for shows and @!#$ dont run caps but there very much needed in a real car so get caps
Re: big power drain!!!
Monday, November 13, 2006 6:47 AM
sorry i ment to rwrite ur sapose to have a 1 frade cap per every 1000 watts
Re: big power drain!!!

Dont listen to that. that is the dumbest advice you can get.

You have to charge the cap also. so yes it may momentarily stop dimming but it is going to need charged again. And agian And Again. so what you just did is add another device that needs charged. you just added to your electrical load.

you want a stereo that is enough to cause dimming:
get a deep cycle and do the big three
You want a stereo that causes a lil more dimming.
get a couple deep cycles and the big three
You want a stereo that can stall your car at idle.
get a high output alternator
as many deep cycles as you can fit
and as many runs of the thickest gauge wire you can.

this is not a cheap aspect whether some dumb ass tells you a capacitor is the only thing you need to run thousands of watts.
To the original poster
A new alternator is only as good as the cabling. You cant expect it to charge everything through the 8 guage wire it is connected with can you? Make sure you upgrade your wiring and battery. You should be fine with that. Just make sure you look into the alternator specs before you buy one.

ive never ran caps. ive upgraded to an optima yellow and upgraded my big 3. im pushing 1200 actual watts without any dimming or idle change. i'd go have your alternator tested to make sure its running properly on an older car i had the alt was running but something inside was bad so it was only putting out like 60 amps instead of 100 like it should have. so that would be the first thing i checked.

I'm running 4500 watts rms right now. No caps, an everstart maxx marine under the back seat. After playing music for 10 seconds my voltage drops from 14 volts to a very scary 12 volts. After about 3 minutes at an idle, the idle starts to drop and the car runs funny. Listen to what Nate and Jason have to say - they know where it's at. You do not need a capacitor as well, it'll hurt you more than help you.

2000 actual watts with a second battery in the trunk. Minimal dimming. Big 3 and HO alt coming as soon as I get a new alt pulley and some time. Just get a yellowtop and do the big 3 and you'll be fine

pilz-e what are you gettin ga new pulley for? If it is for the alt you may not want to do that. let me know and we can discuss it further

i honestly dont know what u guys are sayin cuz all a cap does it act as a storage for the battery u charge a cap once and it will stay charged for ever if u have it hooked up right and this is also why i need a hi enuff frade cap or the power u will drian will be more then the cap can hold

all a cap really is is a storage tho geez the toyota echo witch i did for a girl i know witch is now rated as the loudest echo in north america has like 4000 rms or so but only runs stock battery 4 ga wire thoughtout the car 2 caps and no big 3 and not a dimming problem or anything the car runs fine and its a daily driver

so really i dont think any of u guys even know what ur talkin about

and since i'm a custom audio installer w/e do ur @!#$ ur way and i will luagh when ur cars all run like @!#$

i'm done with u ppl know nothin about sterios serousl thinkin changen some wires will be the best bet @!#$in jokes ya it helps but run the right size wire and have the right size cap for ur amp and ur set dont matter the set up

i've done 500+ cars never had a problem yet and hell looks at the places that does cars for super stars they use caps they just hide them caps dont ever needs to be charged after u do it right the first time and they do help ur all just speds

Funny, that's exactly what I think about you.

I think you need a cookie, it might deflate your ego a little bit. I used to own my own shop, does that make me better then you?

Bye, we won't miss you. I'll look forward to not having to read your drivel and horrible spelling.
evo 1586 wrote:

I've done well over that, never used a cap, and haven't had a single issue.

Oh, here's your cookie, enjoy, I made it myself.

Somehow I managed to miss this. So you're telling me if I'm running 5000 watts, all I need is 5 caps and I'm set? That's better then the advice you get on SD.

Somehow I missed this as well.

Rated as the loudest Echo in NA? How does a car get "rated"? If you think you are running 4000 watts rms through that car with only 4 gauge wire, 2 caps and a stock battery, you are either stupid or blind, I'm not sure which.

Happen to have some pictures or proof of this Echo? I'd like to see it.

the car will be at import fest if any one wants to see it and thats how they said its the loudest echo in n/a next off no u wouldnt need 5 caps justa 5 frade cap frade is the load it holds geez why dont u guys do any reasurch and just find out what caps do stop tryin to think u know ur @!#$ ur just like every other unwillin @!#$ that doesnt wanna admit they might be wrong

oh and me with my typing i could care less wtf u think about it if u dont like it dont read it and mouth off tryin to start @!#$

ive been competing off and in in car audio events since 1998. ive even been a judge for the meca orginasation a few years back not to mention fooling around in audio since 1991.

loudest echo in north america. so that means your proalby competing agains 2 other echo's?

heres where your complelty wrong. yes a cap is a storage device it stores engergy for your system to use when it hits the big spikes. what your failing to realise is that when you hit those big spikes your cap gets drained and now the system has to charge the cap so in essence for those brief times your alternator is being used to deliver power to the stereo and to the cap to replenish it. you want him to go out and spend 100 bucks on a cap when there are several people on this board who are running more power then him withou any issues and without using caps? that makes no sence. he can upgrage his big three for about 20 bucks or less if he has wire laying around wich most audio guys do. hell ive got boxes of it laying around. for what he has i dont think the audio system is the cause of the problem.

he sound's like he work's at best buy haha

before you start talking $hit about anyone on this site and telling them they don't know what they are talking about, you might want to know who your talking to and look up a little history on the people.

Jason told you about him self.

Mike told you about himself

Nate is the loudest Jbody and if you look at his charging system you would know he know's what he's talking about.

now me, i have been going to DB drag event's since 96, worked on many since 98 and im really good friend's with some of the loudest in the world. in 2003 i was invited the the db drag world final's, also usaic (i think thats how you spell it) is 2004 and 2005. i never went because of the drive and i was low on fund's.

Don't come on a site and start talking out your @ss about something you don't know anything about. I myself and many people on this site have seen caps lower you score 1-2 db's (if not more). also as said before they will take power away from your amp's (less input means less out put).

show us something you have did and show us a term-lab score.

when you show us something that you have done, ill show you a few of my team mates car's and we will see who knows more about how to get loud.
