just curious if anyone here uses computer monitors in their cars?? obviously this is for the more show oriented folks. i know a few who do with no issues, but i was just wondering if there are any negatives to using computer monitors instead of LCD/TV's(and i only mean larger sizes....16" - whatever)
anyone got any input??
ps - i have a carputer
i think the only drawback really would be the weight of it. and the power consumption really. isnt a computer montior a higher current draw then normal monitors?
well im not talkin full size projection monitors, lol.....im referring to lcd/flatscreen/widescreen computer monitors.
but ya...i think you're right about the power consumption...hmmm.
Joey, I am for show...making a motorized drawer to come out of the dash, or between the two front seats for my lab top to filp open.....just for show, and tuning....
but with a normal screen....i would say the weight too

weight is gigantic...not to mention power draw, you'd need one helluva inverter. it would look akward, not sleek, sure as hell wouldnt win any trophys.

pros:
price
neutral:
weight isn't that different depending on what you do to mount it. power draw will be typical of any lcd that size.
cons:
you will need an input adapter because vga/dvi is the only input on computer monitors. Viewing angle, brightness, and contrast is made for close viewing in moderate lighting. Most are less rugged and are not made for drastic temperature changes or resistance to UV exposure.
that's about all I can come up with off the top of my head. Just throwin ideas out there, not tryin to bash on any ideas.
idk man i wanna put a 20 inch or biger in mine but i'm talkin a tv tv not a computer monitor so idk again if ur show then w/e @!#$ wieght right just make it look good man ez
Joe - If you have a carputer, you can get a vga to rca/s-video cable. That's what I have for mine. This way you can use a 12 volt monitor and it'll hook right up.
i have the 7" liliput screen in my car with my "carputer" and absolutley love it, and since its touchscreen im using a touchscreen interface "road runner" and its just nice, lol
also i have a plain regular monitor if anyone is looking for one 7" with all wiring pm me if interested.
but joey i got both my screens for cheap PM me if you want more details and all!

IIRC one came with my video card a couple years ago so they shouldn't be that hard to find, especially since they average aboot $1.90 on e-bay

well hot damn son you just made mah day

car audio noob since 1984.
I got it for like 4 bucks shipped on ebay.
WARNING!!!
those cables will only work if your card is capable of doing the conversion SOFTWARE!!!!
they are 2 different types of signals. you cant just change the pins, and expect them to work. thats why there are converter boxes. so if your video card isint capable of such technology...i.e. it didnt come with it...IT WONT WORK, and YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR MONITOR AND/OR VIDEO CARD AND/OR COMPUTER!!!

^^^^^^^^^^ that is correct lundis, i have like 2 of those couplers and even on my laptop which has s-video out it wont work, so yeah just for the heads up, your best bet for a car would be to just get a VGA touchscreen monitor like i did, and there not all that expensive!
