Those who have done 145dB come here please
Monday, October 30, 2006 10:01 AM
Well my goal is to hit 145dB on a TL. I have two alpine type R's running off an ed nine.1. Well im gonna be getting another nine.1 in a few weeks, running 2 yellowtops(1 under the hood and 1 in the trunk), 2 short runs of 4 guage from each amp to a distro that will have two runs of 1/0 gauge to the battery. Now im gonna be using aeroports and im not sure how I should set the box up in the cavvy to get the most output. Any suggestions? Subs facing towards the back of the car or front? Port back on drivers side or through where the stock speakers used to be in the rear deck? Aeroports or slot ports?

fire forward seal off the trunk from the cabin and port on the drivers side. power lots of power is cool.

aeroports, much much easier to tune, (and since you are not running a wall), start with the box tuned REALLY low, and start choping the port sizes down, lower and lower, until you reach you max db, a termlab mic will help you alot with this as well.

AND just a recommendation, have ports cut for daily driving, and ones for competition, I would also suggest placing them outside the enclosure like steam pipes/ a chimney**, this allows for more internal area and makes it easier for tuning to the max db.

(This is the technique we use @ my local shop for clients who wish to compete, we had two CS JBL 10' woofers doing 144.3db with a single rockford BD1000 (old school), loaded down to .5, .....NOt bad for economy woofers)

yea the peek in our car's range from 48-52 so if you tune it around 43-44HZ it will be the loudest.

like Nate said face the sub's into the car and seal everything off so no air leek's into the trunk. if you do that you should hit 145 with one 9.1 im just not to sure about the sub's.

I don't mean to thread-jack, but your supposed to port for the resonant frequency of the car? Just for competition, right? I plant to tune my wall setup to 32-34Hz for daily driving, but it would be nearly imposable to have an interchangeable port.

BTW: Make sure to have at least 40F worth of capacitors! jk

or toss the capacitors and buy a battery or two, for 1/2 the price and way more usefull.

Mine always has peaked in db's at 42-44hz on EVERY MIC I've used.

You have a 4 door, you don't count.

Just messin with ya man. I'm guessing that's the difference. Every mic I've ever been on as Mark said, I've peaked between 48-52. Didn't matter what my box was tuned to. I threw a couple of high tuned, 60hz and up, boxes into my car, the things still peaked at 51hz. I've thrown low tuned, below 30hz, boxes into my car, still peaked about 48-49hz.

even from going from the trunk to a wall, my car is still 49hz. lol

Weird thing is, our old toyota pickup had its best burp @ 71HZ, and I know the is not the Res Freq of that pickup. Different elements can change the best frequncy for the burping.

Ok so a 4 cuft box, external aeroports(4 4") firing driverside with the subs facing towards the cabin? Sealing the trunk from the cabin is that so I can have my back seats down and have it not leak through the deck just go straight through the seats? If so should I seal my rear deck by taking the carpet off it, cutting a piece of 3/4 mdf to the shape of the rear deck, covering the bottom in either some second skin damplifier or some edead then seal it onto the rear deck with some silicone sealer and just cover with the stock carpet? Or is there another easier way to do this?

ide suggest pulling the carpet off and just glassing the rear deck lid, then throw the carpet back down. It saves money on deading, and it will be stiff as hell.

you'll have to seal it off completely if you face it forward. Even in the sides where the quarter panels are, that's all open space that needs to be sealed.

This is where fiberglass resin and mat becomes you best friend.

So wait i would be making my trunk completely unuseable? Like i would have to seal the trunk down and stuff?
Re: Those who have done 145dB come here please

nooo....you need to completely seal the face of the sub box up with the cabin of the vehicle. So the trunk and cabin are completely seperated. That means no leaks in the rear deck, no leaks around the sub box, and you will want to seal up the areas behind the strut towers.

Ok I see what you mean. Seal from where the back seats are around the box so no air gets into the trunk

correct. You need to eliminate the possiblity for the soundwave to get behind the enclosure.

doing that helps out in cancellation and it also means less space for the sub to pressurize.

easiest way to seal it for me was just cutting mdf pieces to fit over the holes. then caulking them down.

Ok well the box will probably be built next week and stuff. Ordering my wire here soon either today or tomorrow. So im gonna have a marine battery in the back and a new battery under the hood. I should run 1/0 between them correct? If so how many feet do you think I will need? I will be doing the big 3 as well so i need to include that.
