I have around 850 rms watts now. but im planning on upgrading on of my amps. so then i will have a total of 1200rms what gauge power wire would i need.
right now i have 4 guage power wire going into a block into 2 8 guage outputs.
I was told i need a cap. is this true
Anything above 600 watts or so and I would upgrade to 4 awg into that amplifier. So just run 4awg into the amp.
With a total of 1200 watts rms, you should be fine with 4awg still, any bigger and i would suggest going up to 0awg.
It also depends on the brand of wire and its strand count.
If its a cheaper brand like Raptor wirirng, and the 4awg is closer to 8 awg, then you want to get a real quality 4awg.
As for the cap. Dont add a cap..say the cap cost $60-80. invest that money into an optima yellow top and then upgrade your under the hood wiring with the big 3. Or try the big 3 first. see if that helps reduce dimming.
Caps are just small batteries. They rate them in Farads. A $70 cap is usually 1 farad. To put it in perspective. An optima yellow top, or a standard deep cycle, on average is 100 farads or more. (so ive read). For around $100-200

yellow top or standard deep cycle i said....the deep cycle can usually be had for 100...then more for the yellow top.

Yeah yellows retail for around 170. I'm running 1200 watts through my amp, and I'm using a 4ga RF wiring kit. Like Alex said, as long as you use a high-quality or high strand wiring, 4 ga will be fine.
you can get used yellow tops for 100 all day long if you look around
but I am going to be using a marine deep cycle for it's longer standby rating than optima yellow top. And it's only like 60 bucks.
Well i have street wires wiring right now, thats 4 ga is that ok?
