Audio Guru Help Needed

ok. i will start out by explaining that this system is in my truck (06 gmc sierra). i am running stock speakers with a high output convertor, 1 farad capacitor (digital), jl amp, pioneer 8"speakers. the funny things i have happening are:

1) when i turn the truck on, it take prolly a minute for the amp to turn on.
2) the digital output on the capacitor will turn on and off while driving
3) the power to the amp doesnt turn off right away once the truck is turned off
4) it seems like for some reason that i dont need the remote wire....i have had it running while connected and also disconnected

what the heck is going on? am i missing something?

Have you tried running the setup without the Cap?

no i havent tried that. it seemed to run just perfectly this morning on my way to work now. wierd stuff. it almost seems like there is a signal being picked up from the speakers and thats what is turning on/off the amp. right now i have no remote wire plug into the amp. it all seems like it is running with the regular system too....when you turn the truck off it doesnt go off right away until you open the doors. i have never had a system do this to me so this is wierd. im going to let it go liek it is for a coupe of days and see what happens. if it is causing damage then it will be ripped out and new component door speakers will go in.

What I would do is try running it without the amp, like Brad said. If you still have issues, most likely the amp is shot.

But....check the following and post results please:

Voltage across the B+ and ground on the amp
Voltage across remote turn-on and ground on the amp (with the wire on and off)
AC voltage across the speaker leads (to make sure the amp is putting out power)
All other connections as well.

Question: when you turn the truck on, does the voltage on the cap show a small amount and then get to 12V? If it does, that could be the reason your amp takes a minute to turn on.

As for the amp not turning off right away, it is because you (I'm pretty sure) have retained accessory (radio turns off when the door opens, not when the truck turns off) and the cap. The cap will run the amp for a few seconds, nothing to be worried about.

Like I said, try taking the cap off first, then check voltages without the cap. Let me know if you have any other questions. Check all connections and make sure they are tight. Also, before you take the cap out, remove the main fuse on the battery to prevent shocks and sparks.

well i can definetly tell you that it has power to the speakers. the speakers sounds great (for 8" pioneers that i have had in my room for like5 yrs). all of the connections are secure and tight. i found that out last night when this happened. i know that i had a ground issue but i fixed that by moving it to a different location. the only real problem i am having now is that the digital readout on the cap goes on/off while playing and also the remote wire not working properly. the remote wire isnt hooked up and it still has power which is what is blowing my mind. the amp cant be fried because i had it in my car for like 3 months and only used it sparingly cuz i never drove the car alot. i will check the voltages when i get home tonight and let you know.

My friend got a brand new Kicker amp, from Stillwater Designs factory, and by the 3rd day it was blown, so don't rule it out. It sounds like an internal short in the amp across the battery and remote turnon lead. Also, is the remote wired correctly behind the radio?

Some jl amps have signal sensing circuits that turn the amp on when they sense an input at the RCA terminals. You don't have to have a remote lead hooked up for the amp to operate.

well labotomi.....you are right my friend. stupid me, i was excited to get this hooked up (i have been without a system for like 4 yrs now) that i totally forgot about that switch. i remembered it tonight when i got home and was lookign over the amp and also tuning it better and foudn that. although that still doesnt solve the issue with the digital readout turning on/off but it works so im happy now. thanks everyone.
