This is for a '00 GMC Jimmy. Using a harness to put the JVC headunit in, the radio gets power and shuts off when you open the door, but you have to manually turn it on everytime and it doesn't save to memory. Have to reset everything. The constant and ignition are wired together, what has to change? Do I need to run the ignition wire to the ignition on the car somewhere? Thanks for the help.
yes. you need a constant +12v for the memory, and a switched +12v to turn the unit on.
btw, this should go into other cars.

I just posted it here because it's more technical on this subject whereas the other forum is more general discussion. So, don't run the constant or ignition wires through the harness? Constant to the battery? And suggestions for the ignition/switched wire? I'd like to tap into the ignition but unsure which wire to use.
the easiest would be to find a switched +12v source in your fuse box inside the vehicle, and use a fuse tap. the HU that was there should have had a constant +12v that you could use instead of running a wire all the way to the battery.

Sorry for all the posts, but here's what I got. I've wired the HU to aftermarket harness which connects to the car's harness. The only way it works, it putting the constant and ign/switched wires together, with the problems stated above. Now, I disconnected the ign/switched from the radio, and ran it to a rdo/ign fuse, and it doesn't work. Unless I connect the ign/switched from the harness side to the constant (not connected to the ign/switched wire from radio). Then, it works just as it did above. Does this mean the constant from the harness is not a constant? This is someone else's car I'm trying to fix for them, had no problems like this in my Cavi.
it sounds like the constant isn't a constant in that harness.
red is for constant, yellow is for switched. you might just need to run your own wires for it.

Alright, the constant and ign/switched come out of the aftermarket harness together and must not be a constant. Running the ign/switched from the radio is no prob, but what about the constant? Anywhere to connect it inside rather than all the way out to the batt? That should be the last question ha.
there should be a constant +12v in the fuse box. you just have to find it.

Every aftermarket harness you can purchase will have YELLOW as CONSTANT and RED as SWITCHED. Freq z, you just reversed the colors.
As for Kyle, it sounds like (in the first post) that you wired the constant and ignition to ignition. All you have to do is connect the yellow wire coming off the head unit to a 12V constant wire. Find it at the ignition cylinder is usually the easiest.

I looked at it again. I apologize for that.
however, not all harnesses will have a constant and a switched. with the Class II databus, there's no switched, only constant.

I didn't mean every single harness, but the colors are going to be the same. So....if you have a red wire and a yellow wire on an aftermarket harness, the red is switched and the yellow is constant. If you have only a yellow wire, that yellow wire is going to a constant wire, ect. Sorry for the confusion.

I got the switched through the harness and constant from the radiobatt fuse on the inside fusebox. Works correctly now. Thanks a lot guys for your help!
