Complete audio makeover, suggestions?
Wednesday, September 27, 2006 11:10 PM
Ok, I am doing a makover of my audio system and I need some help deciding. I am still very new to all this.

Right now, I have 2 12" Pioneer Subs that absulutly suck... walmart brand. Im thinking of buying 2 of these Subwoofers. I am not looking for anything grand, just something to get some good bass out of. I currently have a 800watt max Mono Alpine amp. I do not know the rms at this time... I want to say its like 250-300watts? So are these sub good? If not whats something I can get for around the same price? I belive my amp is a 4 ohm... but not sure, Im very uneducated on the ohms. Most subs have Dual 4 ohms it seems and I dont think my amp can run them, because the dual 4 ohms have 4 connectors on the sub and my amp has only 1 pos and 1 neg? I have 2 pos wires and 2 neg wires hooked up to my amp and 1 each going to one of the subs. Could I hook up dual 4 ohm subs to my momo amp?

I have stock in the front 4x6 door speakers and 6x9 rears. I just purchesed 2 Pioneer 3 Ways for the doors. Good choice? I am considering 2 Pioneer 4 Ways for the back. I need suggestions on some amps for these as well, nothing over $150... like I said, I dont need the best. And would be a good idea to hook up 1 amp to all 4 or 2 amps to 2 each, making a total of 3 amps?

Are these all good ideas? Any suggestions for around the same price and/or what I should do to make my audio better? Sorry if these are noob questions and all... just trying to get my bearings.

Most people tend to stray from Audiobahn. Their subs are nice for the price, but if you want sound quality, they aren't the best for the price. Check out Elemental Designs like Shawn suggested. As for your wiring issues, your amp will put out different amounts of wattage at different ohms. Ohms is a measure of electrical impedance. With the dual 4-ohm voice coils, you can wire them to either a 4 ohm load, or a 1 ohm load. A very helpful tutorial can be found here. You'll only have 2 wires coming off of the sub, so you're fine on the amp. The connections between the voice coils is what will change your impedance.

The front speakers, I'm afraid to say, aren't the best purchase. To balance your sound a bit more, you might have gone with a decent set of 6.5" component speakers (separate woofer and tweeter with crossover) with an adapter plate for the 4x6 location, though they may be out of the price range you're looking to spend. I personally am not a fan of Pioneer speakers or subs either one, so I may be biased, but there's much better 4x6's to be found for relatively cheap. Look into Alpine or Kicker.

The 6x9's aren't necessary if you get a nice sub/amp combo, but if you must, I wouldn't recommend the Pioneers. Some good brands of 6x9's that I've personally heard are Alpine, Kicker, and Rockford Fosgate. I personally run the Rockford Fosgate Power series 6x9 3-ways, found here, but you didn't mention a price limit on those, so I'm not sure if those would interest you. VERY good speakers though.

As for the amp for the mids and highs, Finding a decent powerplant that will run proper wattage to each will be difficult. Look around in pawn shops or flea markets and maybe you'll get lucky. Chances are slim you'll find an amp for that price at a retailer, so eBay will be your friend too.

Another site that might interest you (very good prices) is www.ikesound.com. I had a bit of a problem ordering from them when I bought my sub amp, but it was due to a miscommunication. I called them up and it was put right the same day.

Good luck finding a good system!

If you're doing a revamp, i suggest the following:

A 4 channel amp.
6 1/2 inch components up front
6x9's in the rear
2 dual 4 ohm subs
monoblock sub amp capable of a 1 ohm load
OR
2 dual 2 ohm subs
monoblock sub amp capable of a 2 ohm load

everyone is going to give you their opinion of what speakers they like, for example, i like my lanzar optidrive stuff. others might say rainbow, some might say kicker, but it's all up to YOU.

A friend of mine is going to sell me a 15" JL audio sub that he does not use anymore. He is also throwing in a 450 (true?) watt Kenwood amp for it that he says it push it decently. He made the box for the sub according to the right depth and such. I heard it in his car once and it sounded great, he had a different amp on it tho. He is selling me the sub, amp, and box for $150 so I cant go worng.

I am selling my 250watt mono amp to a friend for $75 and a 4 channle 400 watt kenwood amp to put on my mids and highs. Sound like all this is going to be a good idea?

W3s are good SQ subs. Nothing wrong with them at all.
