Hey guys, just asking questions, catching up, learning about the new car. (04 Cavalier)
I just got a new (stock) Radio off of ebay, one of the headunits with MP3/RDS/AM/FM/CD to replace the one in my car (AM/FM only, no RDS, no theftlock).
I'm going to be digging into this after I get the new stereo (and have a day or two off, since I work two jobs and graveyard) but wanted to know if there would be any forseeable issues with swapping the stereos.
I already asked the guy on Ebay what the VIN was for the vehicle the stereo was pulled from, and the DELCO numbers match up for the same model of radio used in the 2005 Cavaliers (even though it was pulled from a 2006 GMC Canyon) according to GM's XM-Direct Parts list (will be getting a Terk XM Direct kit for this soonish).
Post anything I need to know.
(P.S. - I'm an electronics engineer by trade, and know some guys down at Cook Chevrolet who might be able to help me out too, but figured I'd drop in here first).

you'll have to take the car in to the dealership for a reprogram. basically, they need to unlock the theftlock. after that, it should work fine.

Any way to do this without a trip to the dealership, or do they tap in with an external serial interface?
they have to go in through the OBD-II port using a TEC-II unfortunately.

no the 2000+ radios remember part of the VIN for the car it was installed in at the factory. so when you put it in your car the dealer will perform a VIN relearn. which deletes the old VIN info and set the radio to your VIN.

Went to the dealership, they said 'search some forums, there should be a way to do it without bringing the car to us since we don't have the ability to do it at this dealership'
(Resort town - so its an annex subaru/chevrolet dealership from another part of the state)

if all else fails, I am an electronics engineer, and I know how to look for reset bits (or could try anyhow)
