Setting my amp
Monday, September 11, 2006 2:18 PM
I have a Directed D2400 amp with a Knukonceptz 4 gauge amp kit and my HU is a pioneer DEH-P4600 (or something like that). It's RMS power is 1200 x 1 @ 1 ohm so the voltage i need to read on my multi meter is 34.6. The only way i could get that reading was if i turned on the Bass EQ setting on my amp. Even with the bass eq setting turned on the gain is still 3/4 of the way up. To me, it seems like the gain is set too high. I guess i just don't want to fry my equipment. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

Does the directed have any eq settings on it?

If so set them to 0db.

The other thing is turn the subwoofer volume all the way up and set any eq feature to 0 aswell.

If i have the eq setting off, i can't even reach 30 volts with the gain turned all the way up. This is why i think i have something wrong. or my dmm is messed up.

I just took a voltage reading strait off my battery and it read 26 volts, so i think i'm going to be borrowing a multimeter from someone tomorrow.

Make sure the subwoofer setting on your HU is all the way up, and if you have remote bass boost (like a knob thingy) turn that all the way up. I was getting like 3v when I first tried, then I did those two things and know it's at 34.5

Make sure your DMM is on AC when hooked up to the amp

Hitting 24.5 volts here, 600 watts RMS @ 1 ohm, hehe.

I'm heading out in a little bit to get a new multi-meter. anyone got any preferences on where i should get it... the one i currently have is from wal-mart so i think i'm gonna go to lowe's or radio shack. I'll probably pay more but i'll get one that works (hopefully)

Whoah, someone said bass knob. Bass knobs usually = trouble, they usually only boost at one frequency, and add distortion to your system. Mine have never been hooked up, nor never will, and I can still get proper voltages.

okay, i bought a $30 multi-meter and i still can't get enough power out of my amp. Could it be my ground point. I grounded it under the back seat belt bolt. maybe i didn't get enough paint off? Shouldn't my stock battery be able to power a D2400? 1200 watts isn't that much. I'm going to try a different ground tomorrow.

If i can't get enough power to the amp, will it hurt to run the amp with the 8db bass eq?

It was the only way I could get my system to 34 volts. I have the Orion HCCA d2400. It comes directly from the amp.

I did do another reading on the battery with the new dmm and it's 12.6v. What would the D2400 approximately RMS at 12.6 volts?

if it's 1200 rms @ 14.4 volts, then you're looking at 1060 rms@12.6 volts.

Play a test tone around 50-60 hertz also.

think he was referring to the remove volume knobs, like what kicker uses. their not bass boosts. just a remote volume control for the amp wich i love.

Would a yellow top boost me up to 14.4 volts or would it take a yellow top with a big 3 upgrade?
Re: Setting my amp

Turn your can on when testing the amp. It should increase your vehicles voltage while running.

1200 watts shouldnt be that much.

I had a nine.1 and a nine.2 on the stock electrical system on my z24.

The nine.1 was putting out 1420 watts and the nine.2 was putting out 131 x 2.

So the electrical system shouldnt be the issue. If you have a remote gain knob, plug it in, turn it all the way down and turn the onboard gain all the way down aswell., then unplug the knob.

set your gains without using the remote knob. Ive seen most people screw stuff up when using them.

If its a bass knob=throw it away....

Bass knobs only create clipping sooner than without. and then damages product.

depending on the amp if your remote volume control is hooked up you may need to have it all the way on to get any sound. im pretty sure on my kicker amp i could turn all the gains all the way up and i wouldnt get any sound till i used the remote volume.

I dont enough power at all if the remote gain knob isnt plugged in or on.

Re: Setting my amp

Plug it in, then turn the knob all the way up , then unplug it again.

Or plug it in, turn the gain all the way up, and the knob all the way up, then turn the amps gain down, see if that fixes things.

Do it with the speakers unhooked though.

I measured my battery output today with the engine running and it was 14.5 and the highest i could get a full gain was 33.2 so i think my pre-outs on my HU aren't strong enough . I get my pay check tomorrow so maybe i'll get me a new HU. any suggestions? I know eclipse has 5 volt pre amp out puts on most of their models. I really liked the JVC KD-G820 with the USB on the front and it had 4 volt pre outs. I haven't heard to much good about JVC HU's though. Is that one okay or should i just go with an eclipse HU with 5v pre outs

any input would be great.

i would suggest an eclipse with 5 volts or some of the kenwoods with the 5 volt preouts.

I own an eclipse 5444 and I love it. 13 band eq, hi and lowpass filters. aux input and mp3 playback.

Alot of our customers are running the kenwood 25th anniversary edition and they love the crossover and eq features.

My budget is like $200 dollars for a HU. Would there be any disadvantages of going with that JVC HU? I like the USB port on the front and it's in my price range.

Any way, what should i run my amp at until i get a new HU? is it going to hurt the amp or subs to run it lower than RMS?
