Tuning an amp to subs..Simple!
Sunday, September 03, 2006 10:23 AM
Ok some dude turned my girlfriends amp's settings ALL the way up the other day just @!#$in around without her knowing...yea hes a dousche..but whatever.

She has 2 10" Kicker Comp's with a Kicker ZX250.2 in a sealed box, not sure on the specifications on the box.

Is there anyway anyone can help me set the gains, ect on the amp soon before it does any damage to the subs...? I did turn them down some but I don't know where exactly to set them.

From the sticky:

Tuning your amps

The simplest and easiest way to get your amps tuned is to follow these simple instructions. Grab your digital multimeter and a calculator.

output = square root (watts * ohms)

First, take your amp's wattage at load. For example, let's say your amp does 300 watts rms at 4 ohm. That would be 1200. Take the square root of that and you'll get 34.64101615137755, so let's say 34.64. Take your multimeter and set it to AC volts. Disconnect your speakers from the amplifier. Grab this file here - http://www.realmofexcursion.com/audio/testtones/20Hz_to_120Hz.mp3 - and burn it to a cd. Turn your eq's off, turn your volume to 3/4 of the way up, hook up your multimeter to the + and - of the speaker outputs and play the sine wave. Your peak voltage should hit at the beginning of the cd - adjust your gain till it reads the voltage you figured out earlier, then leave it. Hook your speakers back up, and your gain is set. Don't turn your volume up above this volume or else you'll clip.

Thing is, I have no way to get ahold of a multimeter, just wondering if there was a general "setting" these things should be put on...I know theres 3 dials on the amp but im honestly not to smart electronically so im fighting chuck norris with a blindfold on here.

then you need to set it by ear.

Turn all your dials to the lowest position, or off.
turn your volume up to about 3/4 of the way (or however high you listen to it)
then slowly turn the gain up until you hear it start to sound distorted or muddy sounding. Then turn the dial back a tad from there.

Fifteen dollars at Home Depot for an analog meter. Or, you can go to your local box store (CC,BB) and have their car audio guys tune it. They might do it for free, they might charge you.
