You can easily hit up to a 140db with a single R in a box built for spl, your box is tuned a bit lower though, IT should make for a great all around enclosure.

should I do a 2.5 cube tuned to say 38-40?

I havent seen proof of this yet, however, on some of the Audio competition forums, the more well known guys seem to agree with this, as long as the box is built right.
They also tell me that its severly underrated. i have considered doing the same as you, and running 1000w into my type r with a ported box.
Let me know how it works out for you
I'm not sure if i wanna waste the time and money on the box if I cannot get any answers

I'd do 3 cubic foot with around 35 hertz tuning.
welp building the box. it's gonna be 36Wx15Hx14.75D which makes it out to 3 cubes and it's gonna be tuned to 35hz. hopefully should sound and look decent once done.

how do you like the new setup?? I am thinking about running 1 12" in a ported rather than 2 12" in a sealed box. Is it louder than the 2 -12"?? Just looking for you thoughts on what you think it sounds like.
