I've never really understood this. What is it about different brands of speakers, other than rms rating that makes them sound different?
The only thing I can think of is mechanical noise interferance. Like the cone flexing and the linkages moving around.
What else though?
Sq is mostly about perfect or as close to perfect sound reproduction. SQ setups would be good with Component speakers but you can get by with a good set or coaxials. Most SQ setups ive used or seen at shows include speakers to reproduce 20hrz to 250,000hrz. 20 obviously being subwoofers, and 250K being tweeters.
Other then that, some material specifications like cone material do make a differance other then visual perspectives.
I'm mainly thinking about subwoofers. I have Kicker CompVRs, which everyone says suck for sound quality, but I don't get why they would be any different. They all push the same air around :\

yes, but some push that air around sloppier then others

to me a properly setup SQ system includes a proper corssover network so that frequencies dont cancel each other out.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
The theile/ small parameters are the specs of a speaker and how it work.
The mass of the cone, motor used, coils, ability for the speaker to move so far so fast and be controlled. they all effect how the speaker sounds.
and el fuego....20hrz to 250,000hrz. 20 obviously being subwoofers, and 250K being tweeters.
Its 20 hz to 20,000 hz or 20khz.
alot of humans cant hear above 16-18khz.
While the top end of the spectrum for humans is about 20khz.
Me personally i cant hear above 17.5khz

it seems like now that all of the SQ comps are checking for more than how it actually sounds. set up is a big part of it, not to mention apperance. TV's have nothing to do with SQ but some judges may give you some points for it.

A lot of it has to do with if the sub stays inside the magnetic gap properly and how strong the magnet is. Some of the better sq subs out there like some RE products and ED stuff use better stronger magnets. I know RE uses Neodymium magnets which are extremely strong, they are sometimes referred to as "rare earth magnets". And motor design is how the voice coils stay inside the gap properly where all the magnetism is. Like the RE's have 20+mm of linear one way excursion. Where as the kickers only have 12mm of what they call "effective excursion" and that might even be measured peak to peak instead of one way. So what is called the "BL curve" of the kickers would look horrible compared to ED or RE or adire, or eclipse, or other good subs. After the sub moves past it's linear excursion it sounds like crap because the cone is pretty much just flailing(sp?) around. So the kicker may be able to move a whole two inches of air. But after 1 inch it sucks monkey balls. Where as the RE can move 2.5"s and stay linear while doin it.
that's my understanding of it. Probably not the best explaination, but it will do.
thats a great explanation... another thing that plays hand in hand with the bl curve and motor strenght is the gap. If you have a HUGE gap the speaker isnt very efficient. Alot of SPL subs have huge gaps so once the speaker becomes unlinear it has a pretty huge gap to fall back into.
Speakers like ours have very tight gaps. Increase the efficiency and just produces a better sounding speaker.

But wait there's more
What about in low wattage situations. Like, say 500W. RMS
The speaker probably wouldn't be moving more than an inch in that situation, in this case would there STILL be a sound difference.
Oh and alex, do you people sell any normal sized speakers?
I would have like to try some eD's, but I have a custom enclosure that only fits 10's
they are still 10" 12" 8" 15" and 18" speakers, we just name then a little differently, as we use a surround technology called Eu-Surround Technology eD maximizes overall displacement by keeping effective piston area at a absolute maximum without sacrificing overall suspension capabilities. The effect is more cone area, more output, and better sound quality. which allows for more cone area than your typical speaker, and more cone area= more air movement.
The surround is taller and narrower.

500 watts could get ED's 11kv2 moving a lot more than an inch! Very very effecient subs if you ask me.

still have to figure in materials of the sub etc. this is the main reason allot of us say that you need to go out and listen to the speaker itself to see if it sounds good. and then you also have to be educated to know wethere what your hearing is in the proper enclosure and setup right. when i first got into audio i hated jl i had heard a few dozens cars with jl and it all sounded like crap. then i heard a set that was setup properly and realised they were good speakers. with subs having the right box is going to make just as much impact on how the sub sounds as to what brand it is.
