Any experiences with Focal?
Thursday, August 10, 2006 12:47 PM
I went to CarToys yesterday and the salesman was pushing Focal pretty hard... even showed me his '04 bmw loaded with Focal speakers. It sounded great, and looked like something that should be in competitions. He "said" he had hit 157 dbs the one time he had it checked. BUT, no matter what he was really putting out, it sounded clean and I couldnt hear myself think in it. I was wondering if anyone here had them and what they thought about them. He was running 3 of the 11" Access speakers in a custom box beneath the package tray, which was cut out to show off the speakers. I wont have the room for that so I was thinking 2 of the 13" speakers. http://www.focal-america.com/Products/Polyglass/PolyglassV1.html

Its a toss up right now between the Focals (299.00) and JL W6's (449.00).
Thanks in advance.

I don't have experience with their subs but I LOVE focal components.
If I wasn't going alpine and if I had the money I would buy a set of focals any day.

Focal is all I have (tweeters, mid range, and mid bass), with JL subs. Unless you win the lottery, you won't find better quality speakers. The Focal subs are not bad, personally for subs I like the JL's because of their solid history, but I wasn't sure if you are questioning Focal's subs.

Would be my exact setup if I wasn't going alpine.
JL and Focal.

^ Well Alpine is not too shabby!

Back on topic, I guess you are talking about just subs. Either way you will do well, both brands sound excellent. We have not sold enough Focal subs to see how they hold up to abuse though.

Just make sure you are buying them from an authorized dealer. There are some Focal copycats out there and they look identical. If you have a little extra cash you should look at the Utopias. The new BE line is absolutuely awesome but expensive.

The Utopia costs more and handles less power???? Ok, I realize I dont know alot about speakers...... but that sounds stupid. Can someone please 'splain to me the difference in the speakers to warrant paying more for less?

We did some minor upgrades to my friends '05 cav over the weekend. The front we installed were Focal Polyglass 130V2's.
Absolutely amazing sound and quality if you have a decent amp to run them . . . although the BE's (Beryllium) are absolutely insane if you got the extra cash for them ($1200-$2000 CDN).

I believe it is the material they are made out of. They are able to reproduce sound at a more real to life quality, though as a result are not as durable to handle greater power. But, with something of that high end you would not be running 1000 watts to the tweeters and seeking "sound quality" anyhow.

when your wanting the best most accurate sound your generally not needing enough power to kill your ears permanently.

I have 6.5 components up front and love them to death, I can crank it till my ears bleed and they still won`t distort. As long as you have a quality amp running them, you shouldn`t have a problem!
