My experience with Infinity

I copied this from my review on Crutchfield. It's my experience with the Infinity Basslink during the time I had it:

I bought the Infinity Basslink about 3-1/2 years ago and have been using it until just recently. During my experience with it, I must say that I was very impressed by the sound quality. There is strong bass throughout the 20-120Hz range, it's easy to install, looks good, and hasn't had any problems... until just recently. I was driving my car, went to adjust my power mirror, and heard a small 'pop' through the sub. I didn't think much of it, until I got back in my car about an hour later and there was no sound coming from the sub. I checked all the connections, fuses, etc. and everything was fine. The power light was still on, but there was no sound. So, I took it to have it checked at a local stereo shop, and they told me the amp was blown. After hearing this, I decided to do some investigation, and have found that more than one Basslink being sold on eBay had suffered the same fate as mine. This upsets me greatly, seeing as I paid $400 for this piece of equipment only 3 years ago. What magnifies this anger is that about a year ago, I had an Infinity subwoofer in my home theater system and it suddenly stopped working and would only buzz when the system was turned on. I used to promote Infinity regularly, but I don't believe I will be purchasing another product from them for quite a while.

Also, an addendum: I just went out and bought a Visonik 10" woofer/amp combo for $60 ($50 after the mail-in rebate) from Pep Boys, and I actually think it sounds better than the Basslink. It's not quite as loud, but it has more clarity and hits the higher frequency (80-120Hz) notes better. Plus, if it blows up in a year, I could care less.

simple....the basslink was designed as fill, NOT DB...mine worked for 3 or 4 years till I just decided I needed more bass and to my knowledge its still working (sold it 2 years ago) The reason your visonik sounds half decent is because of the box its in, the basslink was in a small box for compactness. I'm still a firm believer in infinity stuff myself. Speakers blow, it happens simply put, but do what you want

So how long does something have to last for it to not be crap? Electronics are finicky creatures, where was it mounted? In Pittsburgh there are quite a few seasons also.

Where did you buy it from, E-bay or Crutchfield?

Figuring acceptable lifetime = days lasted / $ spent then you are looking at 3.19 days/$ on your Basslink, figuring that as long as your new stuff lasts 160 days you come out ahead, I guess if your new stuff lasts longer than 5.5 months then Visonik is better than Infinity?

I don't think so.

3.5 years is quite decent. I see Basslinks going for $245 nowadays (Canadian)

Well, let me try to address all questions/comments:

First off, I know that the Basslink was not designed for dB, that's the main reason I bought it. I didn't want to be able to hear the sub outside of the car, I just wanted some nice low-end response.

Second, the speaker didn't blow, the amp did. I hooked another amp to the speaker to test it, and it worked fine. The amp is also what blew on my home theater sub, not the speaker. So that means that I've owned two Infinity amps and both have blown in a relatively short amount of time.

Third, how long does something have to last for it to not be crap? Well, a friend of mine has 2 Jensen 10" subs and a Jensen amp that cost him $80 total, and he's been using them for at least 4 years now and they sound great. Another friend has about 3 or 4 different off-brand amps that he's had in his cars for over 6 years. And my dad has a $59 bass tube he bought from JCWhitney for his Jeep in 2001, which still worked when he took it out to sell his Jeep 3 months ago. So I dunno, I guess maybe I had higher expectations for my "superior" subwoofer.

I bought it from an authorized Infinity dealer, which is where I bought most of my other stereo stuff, also. But for service, I took it to a different stereo shop and they told me that they stopped selling the Infinity brand long ago because of their questionable reliability.

Read through this. Most of the posts are complete garbage, but some are good, especially the very last one.

Here's another post with the exact same problem

I had a bass link. Bought it used, atleats a year old then a while in storage, And i beat the living poo out of it and it still works. Sold it a while back for $50 to a friend, and he still uses it.

May i make a simple suggestion?

Ground the rca's to the basslink, i bet your magical amp problems will be solved. Thats a known issue. Most people think the amp is fried, its not, just the inside connection for the rca ground has disconnected Thus, amp no longer works properly. Try it.

If that's all it took to convince you Infinity sucks then dear god get off this site, you will really hate your J after reading a couple threads in the maintenance forum.

I have never had a problem with any of my infinity speakers/subs, you're over-reacting. However, any self respecting person wouldn't put one of those sub/amp combo things in their car in the first place

I've had my J for almost 5 years now... I hated it before I got on this site

and Infinity still sucks

And your still retarded to be unable to fix a common problem in ALL self contained subwoofer systems. Even the kenwood and alpine systems have the same problem.

^ maybe I don't care? If I wanted to go fix it, I could. But, it's not on the top of my list of things to do.

and you're still a retard for being alive? is that offensive enough for you?

You want offensive? Try this:

Do you speak any language that non-gibbering idiots can understand? Try learning elementary grammar before attempting to inflict your next literary abomination on this message board.

I don't know what makes you such a worthless poster, but it really works! You are obviously suffering from Clue Deficit Disorder. However, I'll consider letting you have the last word if you guarantee it will be your last. As Robert Wilensky said: "We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true."

If that post was intended as a joke, you forgot to include the punch line. I bet you thought it was just coincidence that your parents had the same surnames before they married? Maybe you wouldn't come across as such a jellyfish-sucking mental midget if you weren't intellectually outclassed by dead sheep; if your weren't so fat that the Brooklyn Bridge would collapse if you ever tried to go Bungee Jumping off of it, or if you didn't have a face so ugly that your mom had to get well-and-truly drunk before she could breast feed you. Who am I kidding? You would.

In conclusion, sit down and shut up before trip over your own tongue and hurt yourself.

Just because i keep my posts are short, Doesn't mean i cant fight back the drool you spew.

that's all I have to say...

also, thanks for the offensive paragraph(s). I love knowing that I am getting under someone's skin enough to make them actually type that much out about nothing. that is, if you actually wrote all that, and didn't just copy-and-paste it from somewhere else

Infinity still sucks!

yeah i gotta agree your a dumbass...seriously getting nearly 4 years of use out of car electronics is damn good...do you know what the 2 biggest killers of all electronics is? dust and viberations...a car produces a ton of both (well a car dosnt produce dust...but plenty gets in there)...and maybe you should look into what elfugily or w/e his name is said...if you cant even do that then maybe you should go buy a new car with a factory sub in it
