So I am looking at possibly using this amp to power all my normal speakers in the car (set of front components and a set of rear 6X9's:
Infinity 7541
My questions/concern is that I want to hang it in the trunk, under the 6X9's. There will be a 3" spacer to get it below the tension bars for the trunk, I am just worried that the ears that are holding the amp (made of plastic) will break and destroy my amp. Comments?
I am not sure if you can mount that amp with the top side down due to cooling issues. I know some amps can handle that though. Even if you had it top side up, I would worry about lack of air movement over the amp for cooling.
That make sense?
That doesn't make much sense to me for cooling issues. Why would inverting the amp have an adverse affect on air flow?
I would also think mounting it on a metal surface instead of a cloth base would help as well that there wouldn't be the fuzz and such under the amp decreasing the airflow.
I wouldnt do it. That amp is HUGE and is very heavy. Youll see once you get it.
Heat rises, and most of the heat comes out of the top of the amp. If there was a fan on top of the amp you would definately not want to do this, because that would be where most of the air escapes.
The tops of the ampos are where the heat sinks are all located to draw the heat off the amp board. They are no supposed to be mounted upside down.
if you were to mount it upside down, go get a computer cooling fan to circulate the air to keep everything nice and cool.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
ok i used to have that amp. NO you can not mount that upside down, the am will
fry!!!

other than that the best way to go for speakers is probably Sony. I have 2 amps working on the 3rd and love them to death. i run 2 4x6 4 voice sony's and 2 MTX 6x9's. they sound great through the 220 w sony amp!
If you're going to use a 3" spacer, why not build a thin aluminium shelf (or some kind of frame) under the rear deck, just low enough that the top of the heatsink clears the torsion bars? That way you can mount your amp upright so that it cools properly. A shelf would eliminate the broken foot concern as well.

I am using the spacer to clear the torsion bars, though I am almost to the point of removing the torsion bars and using the Convertible hinge assemblies so I will have all the space I want. Make a shelf and mount it, though would loose some of the dramatic effect of seeing the amp under there. I don't really have another location to mount it as I need to keep the rear seat so I can haul larger things if need be.
I have talked to a couple of stereo places locally and the general consensus is as long as I am not pounding the amp hard (which I won't be doing) for long periods of time I should be fine. I am working on a design to install a shelf and should have some info on it shortly. I also will buy the lifetime protection thing and if it frys get it replaced for free, though I think the only time that it may be an issue is if I were tot totally cram the trunk full of stuff. I will design the shelf so there is clear airspace under the amp, and possibly add the suggested 12V fan to pull air up as well (utilizing the remote amp wire and a relay to activate the fan)
We will see the thing is huge and may not even fit where I want to put it.
Unless your trunk is empty it's not going to be easy to see the amp anyway if it's tucked away under your deck. I'm guessing that you're going to have it angled down so that it can be seen, correct?
If you're going to put it upside down I definitely suggest a fan. I've never seen an infinity amp that didn't run hot at idle, and the fan will definitely keep it from frying itself.
Good luck!

Paul, i wouldn't buy an infinity amp, but that's just me.
Thanks for the suggestion, with not justification......
^^^ That was exactly what I was thinking about when I suggested shelf. Except with 2 aluminum bars, not one.

id suggest running it fins up. even if u dont hammer it your trunk is going to be over 100 degrees in hot weather in the sun add to that the heat from the amp and it can get hot quickly. when u flip the amp your heat will rise and instead of rising up to the fins it is rising up to the amps circuit board, thast the problem. a fan may keep the fins cooler by it may not get to the heat that is frying the circuit board. some amps may be fine others might not. since your going thru the work of mounting the amp as u are i'd go with a mount like above but maybe with two bars instead of the one.

Well here is what I found.. The aluminum heat sinks are on the far outsides. The curcuit board is suspended in the middle of the assembly, with equal space above and below in the cavity, there is no aluminum either above or below the circuit boards inside the amp so all heat is dispersed to the sides. I will have pictures of my mounting later, and yes it is being checked over by an audio shop that is an authorized Infinity dealer so that if there are any issues that may pertain to warranty I can have them addressed.
Why ask if you already knew what you were going to do to begin with

Sold 6/30/06.
I currently have that amp and I'm only running ONE set of components up front, thats all its powering, and that amp COOKS. it gets hot as hell. And it is pretty heavy, I dont think I would try to mount it upside down on those plastic tabs.
