Okay here's the deal. I'm trying to get the renderings and design done for my trunk and I'm wondering about whether or not this will work. I have a concept I like the idea of but I don't know if it's the best way to go. I'm going to be running a single 15" and I'm using my current slot vent enclosure as part of the system, mostly since I put a lot of time into building it and getting it right. I want to trim out the trunk so that the enclosure is integrated into it. No big deal. I also want to trim out the space in the pass through so that the box is also integrated there. Again, no big deal. My sub is going to be rear firing, and in order to let the sound into the cabin I've considering building two large ports that would connect between the two trim panels on either side of the actual enclosure. In a sense it's almost like a very large bandpass box - not really but that's the best way I can describe it. It works on paper but musically I'm not sure. If hope I've described that pretty clearly. I was just wanting some opinions or maybe a littel direction from more experienced builders..

I got the idea from looking at an S-10 standard cab a couple years ago that had a couple of subs in the bed. The guy had built a pass-through from the bed into the cabin and it looked cool as hell and sounded really nice, too. It seemed like something I could apply to my car.
^ I was thinking the same thing. Might make it sound like a f'ed up bandpass.

I would have to agree with Lash on this. But on the other hand it might sound pretty good, as long as the ports are big enough to let the music flow to the cabin. I have a question on that one though. How big would they have to be? I am thinking 3-5 inches.

Hmm....probably as big as possible. The important thing to know is how small is too small.
Probably gonna be one of those hit or miss type of things.

Okay. As I had said it's going to be rear firing. The enclosure will be centered so there will be space on both sides. Right now there's about 8" on either side, and for the ports I was going to use 1/2 or 1/4" material to take as little space as possible. Basically I'm planning to just trim put the space so that it all has a nice finish to it. I may even set it off to one side so that there's one single port. The intention here is purely cosmetic but I was curious as to whether it really would affect the sound at all. And I'll be running plenty of power to the sub so I'm not so much concerned about sound not geting into the cabin. Rather I'm concerned about getting an undesired effect.
if done right, there shouldnt be a problem, Im gunna be buying a couple 6 inch aero ports when i finish working on my rear deck, and im not too worried

are you dead set on rear firing? If not forward cface it and then seal the trunk off. you will almost have a wall from the trunk in. plus it will yield a higher spl score if that is what you are looking for and rattles are very effectively killed.
I'm not completely dead set on a rear fire yet. I've been experimenting with different setups over the last couple years and the rear fire always just sounded better to me. I'm not looking for a hardcore SPL setup but I'll probably go to a local event on occasion, who knows. This build is more of a daily driver kind of thing. I like my music loud but also clean. I'm going to be throwing about 1300W at the sub alone, and about 200W to each channel on my components. So being loud won't be a problem. I know I can get better SPL with a forward firing sub but in the past I've just been very unhappy with the results. It always seemed that as far as the sound quality the timing was way off. I could typically correct it with the digital time alignment but it never seemed to be quite right until I did the rear firing setup.
BTW I'm not concerned about rattles. My entire car is getting a solid layer of deadener, and in the trunk every surface will be covered. I've already done the most annoying ones; license plate, spoiler, deck lid, wheel wells, etc, plus a few of the interior panels have been covered on the back side.
