just an open box like most people have
regualar = sealed
that's what i think he means at least
I have a bandpass in my car and i used to have a sealed but the subs went from boston's to dual's but i liked the sealed better. But the bandpass does seem to go lower and hold the bass out for alot longer. With the music i listen to it seems to just be constant bass it just varies in how loud it is.
my next box im trying ported though so pretty soon ill know what they all sound like.
The Dual loaded bandpass enclosure from Best Buy doesn't count as a properly built bandpass box.

some of the crap said in the jbo audio forum baffles me... ak z24, your advice doesnt count in this matter, a properly and professionaly built true bandpass box sounds amazing IMO, i have only heard 2 done right, those fukin plexi glass, neon light, sloppy crappy ass, bottom of the barrel dual GARBAGE things do not count, those should not be sold to anyone period.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.
i had lots of toys when i was young.slinky,etc.but once i found my penis, that was all she wrote
i have worked at a professional car audio shop fro 3 years now and i can tell you that it all depends on a lot lets say you want to play all around bass, well does your amp or crossover have a subsonic setting? if not then perfect, but if so then turn it lowest as a subsonic is not needed for a sealed enclosure, it will play or try to play all notes and it relatively safe and reliable, but on the other hand, if you wanted to go with a ported enclosure, then you need to know what frequency range you want and then tune the ports from there (common sense) ported are louder, night and day difference, but could require a lot more tweaking of the amp/crossovers, etc...
If bandpass truly sucked, or was a one note wonder, i wouldn't have most of it built.
bandpass box's CAN be good, but like anything they need to be built properly.
a bandpass is probably the hardest thing to build.
there are a few different kinds as well. 4th order, 6th order, and 8th order (i think, might be just 4th and 8th, cant remember).
anyways, a bandpass box is similar to a ported design, but is alot easier to screw up than a ported enclosure. if anyone has ever built a bad ported enclosure, you know how easily they can be screwed up.
by far, sealed is the easiest type of enclosure, as it pretty much just need to have a close level of volume within certain parameters. sealed boxes are very forgiving.
ported boxes, if built incorectly can sound like garbage AND can force you to say goodbuy to your sub. when built corectly, the ported box will play the frequencies it is designed for very well.
a bandpass box is similar to a ported because it is tuned for certain frequencies. this is the least forgiving box becaue if built incorectly and the sub blows, your now out a subwoofer and a box too.
a bandpass has a very unique sound. the 10" woofer i have in mine sounds great. my box is about 1.5 cubic feet. the samee sub in a ported was going to be designed in a 1.25 cubic round port or 1 cubic foot rectangular port. in a sealed it waas going to be 1 cubic or less.
bandpass box's can be big bastards, so be prepared if considering one. DO NOT BUY A PREMADE BANDPASS BOX! a box, bandpass' especially, should be made for that EXACT subwoofer. extensive testing and carefull calcultaions are needed to come up with the dimensions for a box that intricate.
in the end, it depends on what you want the sub to do. if you like alot of trunk room, a sealed box is probably your best route. if trunk space isnt an issue, you need to look at other questions. a bandpass is tuned for frequencies, and when it hits those frequencies, it will hit them well. but, if tuned incorectly, a bandpass will not do a very good job of hitting the frequencies you may want.
Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
bandpass box's can give a great sound kinda like a abc box, they go low and can give you the same spl over a wider range of music
from my understanding with a 4th order you tune the port higher (around 60hz) but the size of the sealed chamber determines how low the sub can play.
with a 6th order both sides are ported, one tuned high and one tuned low.
if you do go with a bandpass get one custom made or it will sound like @ss
so would my shotty duals from besy buy that came in the bandpass box sound better in a sealed box?
Probably.
Best Buy pre-fab bandpass boxes= teh suck

i have a bandpass
this box holds one 12" sub
its made well, sounds amazing
pounds harder then most of my friends with dual 12"
well im freakin clueless on how to make boxes so how should i go about doing this?
if you are looking to get a little louder than a sealed box. but dont want the extra complexity of a bandpass. then why not look into a vented enclosure. i like the looks of a slot ported box.

Yes...but generalizations suck. Not all bandpasses will sound like ****.

I vote for vented. I'm pretty happy with mine. I tried a seald box, the typical round ported box, then I did this slot vented box and it's been great. Only down side is it's fricken huge and I have almost no trunk space. There's a spare tire under it but I keep a can of fix-a-flat because I can't get the tire out with the box in there, and to get the box out the back seat has to come out. PITA.

Well....look at it this way. You could probably put 2 sealed subs in there that would take up just as much or more room (probably alot more room since you run a 15"...plus you'd probably need more power) and would only be just as loud as your single sub.
