taking apart a sub - how???

Hey,

I have an Alpine 12" Type S sub and I think it has a broken voice coil or something.
Is there anyway to take it apart and fix it???
I tried looking for some way to do it but I didn't find anything.

When I hook it up to my speaker wires out of the amp, it does nothin so I'm thinkin it's a broken voice coil... maybe not.

Thanks

-Seth

check the leads that go from the terminals to the voice coil first - they can break or come apart, you can just resoilder them.

Did that.
They're fine.
Maybe this would help too, when i tap on a good subs cone, i get a hollow sound, when i tap on the bad one, i get a hollow sound and a sorta *dink* noise.

soo it's not frozen.

You can take off the foam the screws go through, then use a knife carefully unglue the surround from the gasket and then unsoilder the leads from the basket and the cone will come out.

Usually you'ed have to replace something, aka recone the woofer

I wouldn't do it if you don't know what your doing.

Check your warrenty see how much it would be to send back to alpine.

Unfortunately, Ebay doesn't come with a warranty

Do you have a pic or a description of what it would look like under the "wavy thing under the cone" (can't come up with the word right now)???

take a drywall knife and ram it through the cone and spider, saw sll the way around to open it up and it should lift right out by tugging hard on the tinsel leads. grab a slinky and replace it with the voicecoil, then use duct tape to separate each coil from each other. next, twist your tinsel leads onto the two ends of the slinky and slam the cone back in. heres where it gets tricky, you need clear scotch tape to bond the cone and spyder back to normal and VOILA! you're done.

I tried taking apart a rockbox sub. undo the cone by gently pressing up on the surround until you hear a kind of tearing sound, thats the glue coming off... thats about how far I got without destroying anything. I had to cut the spyder to remove the cone. The voice coil is usually right under the spyder. Mine was totally fried, I took it apart because I'm ghetto and wanted to fix it, but I didnt have any wires long enough. I'm sure you could probably rewire it with speaker wires. After a while I just decided to rip the magnet off and use it as a passive radiator

Ya I got the cone and the top spider off without cutting anything but now theres another spider under the top one and i can't get to it.
O well, guess i'll hang it on the wall or somethin.
