Trunk rattling?
Monday, April 03, 2006 3:09 PM
Hey everyone, i just put a pair of 12" subs in my 2000 cavalier. The sound awesome inside, replaced all the speakers, head unit, and got a pretty decent amp for the subs, but the trunk makes so much noise it's horrible! even at moderate listening levels, it rattles enough to be annoying if you're outside the car. Anyone know what i should do to stop the rattling? i've looked around on the inside of the trunk lid and have put rags and some bubble wrap around a bunch of wires and such that look like it could be causing the rattling but it hasn't helped. Anyone else have this problem? also, i know it's something in the lid because with the trunk open it doesn't make the noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

get some sound damping, many brands out there some more expensive then others all do the same thing.

Search for ideas this is usually brought up at least once a week.

Other things to try, add the two screws to the bottom of your lisease plate but put a small peice of cloth or something between that and the bumper.

Zip tie any loose wires on your rear deck also helps. If you need some ideas on what a trunk looks like damped look at my page. damping

i know it sounds dumb but get a buddy to sit in the drivers seat, then crawl in the trunk, turn it up and press on panels, if rattles stop, thats where you need to sound deaden. dont forget a flashlight. you can also do the same for outside panels, just apply pressure.

sound deadening is all I can think of. My trunk rattle in my camry was from the trunk trying to fly open but the lock or whatever was holding it down... that and the liscense plate vibrating. if you want a clean boom outside the car, then do that, otherwise, as long as it sounds good inside, I dont care about trunk rattle. It's not like I'm going to be sitting inside listening to it.

Dunno how the spoiler in the cavy is connected, but in the sunfire, it's held on by screws. That was one of the things that was rattling in mine

i took a piece of 4 ga wire, and pulled out all the copper insides and jammed it in there

i dunno how this helps you but i felt like telling you guys!

put rubber feet on the trunk lid where it meets the bottom center(latch area) it will provide force on the latch and it shouldnt rattle anymore.

no, but I had to remove one of the rear seatbelts because it was making so much @!#$in noise. I had everything dampened and couldn't find where the noise was coming from but then placed a fair amount of pressure on that seatbelt bracket and it all stopped. I then spent the remaining part of the day trying to get it unbolted with a regular sized ratchet when a breaker bar woulda been a lot easier, but I didn't have one. What a pain. The only way to get rid of rattles is to find them and then either add mass to that panel with dynamat/fatmat/b-quiet/any other sound deadener, or stiffen it with some kind of support brace or get rid of the object that is rattling. Most of the time it will be easier to go the sound deadener way.

something you can do to help, might be to adjust your latch so it closes tigher. I"ve done this in many 80's g-bodies and it worked like a charm.

I haven't looked at the latch on my cavy, but it may just be possible to loosen the bolts and adjust it a bit so it closes tighter.

Dynamat is your friend
I got 1400 watts in my trunk and no rattles. Of course I did replace my back deck with sub box carpet adn took out the kddie seat latches. I also put new speakers down and made sure the drills were drilled down tight. I cut a whole to make the speaker pop out the top so i could use the grills. Ive got mat on both my doors and throughout my entire trunk. Other than the fire that my amp caused in my trunk everythings fine (P.S. Dont take your @!#$ to best buy..theyll @!#$ it up!)
