Been having trouble with my system for a little over a year now. I wonder if it's directly linked to the fact that my idiot friend screwed my ground wire through the floor of my trunk where my spare tire is, allowing it to get wet.
I have a Kenwood head unit and 1000W Sony Xplod amp hooked to two 12" 800W sony Xplod subs with a .5 Farat Rockford Fosgate Cap.
My stereo Occasionally decides to cut off for no apparant reason. It looses all power and shuts off. Usually if I remove the faceplate and then put it back on, it turns it back on. Sometimes it turns itself back on within a matter of seconds. This problem only seems to happen when the power going to my subs is up too high for too long. It also seems to happen more frequently when it rains, which is why I wondered about the ground wire. It doesn't seem to make sense though, how the amp could shut off the head unit. I also think my faceplate has a loose connection, although this started before I began to have problems with my faceplate. The faceplate sometimes goes blank when I touch it. It's the flip down type where you put the CD in behind the faceplate. Again, I don't think this is directly related to my stereo shutting off completely. When my stereo IS working correctly (which it does occasionally), it sounds great for the most part, with the exception that if I leave the power to the subs too high for too long, I seem to lose loudness in my interior speakers (which are factory BTW).
Any comments? Suggestions?
how does your ground wire get wet?
that's a fine location

Not the ground wire itself, but the screw that is attached to it that's going through the floor and through a piece of particle board on the under side of the car. It also sticks out through the particle board. (I still want to move it, though, as it's more in the way there than it would be somewhere else). I was just seeing if perhaps this could be contributing to my problem.
that would cause a problem unless it's severly rusty or something. just spray some flat black paint on the underside and you won't have it rust in the future.

look at the stuff your working with....

theres your problem...

JBO'S Mr. 64.....
seriously, sony amps and subs are bad...
but that doesnt sound like your problem here
i dont know why the HU would be shutting off but sony amps have a tendancy ot run HOT and it might cut out when it goes into protection mode so it doesnt fry itself
ur actually lucky, alot of times sony amps just melt themselves and are trash, at least urs works for a little while
i say, send the HU to kenwood or wutever and see if its broken, then check all the wiring three times, then move the ground and if it still happens then just /die
its his power wire and ground wire to the head unit. i had the same problem. the idiots at my local car audio shop didnt even know it. so i fixed it myself. just replace those 2 wires from your head unit with some 18 gauge and you should be set.

Think it's possible that the power and ground wires to my head unit are too small? My HU only pushes 200W (50W to each channel).

I seriously doubt that is my problem. Contrary to everything bad everyone says about Xplod, I've been lucky so far. This system has been in for about 4 years now and I haven't had a single problem with my amp or my subs. The only trouble I have is with the HU. Of course the amp shuts off when the HU does, but that only makes sense. Lack of power going to the remote wire is going to shut off my amp. The amp does come back on when the HU does. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps Wojo is onto something. I also think I should move my ground (something I've been planning for a while, anyway. I know my wiring to the amp and subs is good, as I don't have any trouble out of them. The HU is my only trouble. I'll probably try Wojo's suggestion and upgrade the wiring to the HU (although I'm not looking forward to the work that will be involved with THAT), and may send my HU to a place that works on HUs (Best Buy, Radioactive maybe, or I might just send it into Kenwood). But since the HU is four years old, I've actually wondered if the repair costs will exceed the value of the HU. It was a $350 HU when I bought it, but you know how fast the things depreciate in value. May be time to buy an all new HU anyway.
18 gauge wire huh? thats like ribbon thin bud. The stocker is 16 gauge at least. the next time it does it. Dont take the face plate off. instead push on it where the connection is. I bet when you push in on it it will turn back on. if that is the case look for a bent pin on the connectors on the face and on the deck. Make sure they arent dirty or have anything on them. does it only happen with the volume up or does it do it at low volume sometimes.
If they're not bent, hit them up with a pencil eraser.

stock wiring is perfectly fine for a headunit.

The faceplate is loose. This much I know, but because it's the type you have to flip down to insert a CD, the stereo still works with the faceplate down. So the pins aren't the reason that it shuts off. It does usually shut itself off at high volumes and lowering the volume does help. The pins could still possibly be bent, though. That would explain the faceplate going blank sometimes and the speakers still putting out. Yes, when that happens, pushing in on the faceplate does bring back the screen. This is the reason I thought about sending it in for repairs. Still doesn't fix the thing turning itself off, though.
what about the part that shows the faceplate is on it befoe you detach it is that messed up
somethin really stupid now...I turned "loud" off on my stereo, so far seems to have solved virtually all my problems. I don't get it.
your amp may have anti clip
Loud = distortion. If everthing's set up right, you don't need loudness.
well yeah sony amps are notouris for shutting off reground your wire some were different just for the hell of it and if it still shuts off check to see if the subs are hooked up to the right ohm load for that amp because your amp might not be stable with what ever load you have running if that doesnt fix it toss the amp in the trash and buy a kenwood or a percision power

eh, that's a pretty general statement.
loudness contour boosts the upper and lower end of freq. at low volumes. when you get to the upper range of the volume knob, it has little or no effect given that your stuff is set properly.
Basically it's designed to keep the bass and treble to sound equal relative to the volume
bcae explains it better then i can
