Anyone weld in their head unit?

This is really just out of curiosity.

I was at an electronics store and a Pioneer unit caught my eye.

I don't have a single audio mod because I just know that if I were to put in anything nice, someone would come along and tear up my dash to get it out and I just don't need the hassle.

The unit I looked at was $1899 and had a built in navigation system. Very nice. I'm not into music, but I could totally appreciate a great GPS nav system.

So... I asked the salesman... "If I were to get something like this, what features does it have to keep itself from getting ripped out of my car? Can I remove the screen or the faceplate or anything?"

He pretty much told me no. He said there's a small part of the faceplate that comes off but that they're easily replacable so basically, I'm screwed if someone wants it.

Obviously that sucks.

So I was wondering... what do people do to keep their gear? Do you just trust in your alarm or do people weld them in or take other drastic measures?

After that little discussion, it just seemed really stupid to me for anyone to get an aftermarket deck worth that much, no matter how nice it would be to have.

Take my face plate off. I would figure that the heat and current from welding would fry the HU if you where to weld it.

Yeah, I kinda figured that too.

I'd just really like a nav system but putting one in seems akin to just leaving a g-note sitting on my passenger seat and hoping the windows will keep it in there.

think of iit this way. short of sleeping in youir car there is no sure fire way to stop someone from getting your gear if they want it bad enough. you just have to make it as difficult as possible

Unfortunately, You basically gotta trust in your alarm.

I personally have a 2 way paging alarm with battery back up, and 2 mini pezo (110Db) sirens mounted under the dash. Basically the idea being that if someone want's my gear, it's gonna cause them some pain.

I also have a glass break sensor so I'll know if some busted out a window on my car, and I also have a perimeter alarm in case either me or my girlfriend leave a window down.

I've also mounted the alarm brain in an out of the way location and will be moving the siren into the fender well when I get the chance.

Now yes, i have not installed my audio system yet... but i will be in the next week or so. I basically wanted to make sure I had an enough of an alarm to protect it. I'll be keeping the exterior of the speakers as stock looking as possible, and I'll be taking the HU face plate with me where ever I go.

Now if all that does not give you a sense of security, I dunno what to tell you. Audio just is not for you. If you just want a GPS nav system I'd suggest TOM TOM GO.It's a grand cheaper, portable, discrete and gives you the nav capabilities you wanted.

Yeah, I also looked at those Magellan Roadmate's. Also a grand cheaper... but there was just something really alluring about the in-dash setup Pioneer has.

None of this would be in my budget for the next couple years regardless, but I was really wondering whether I'd just be stressed out all the time if I actually put one in.

I think I would be, no matter how many alarm features I added.

Society sucks!! We should be able to have nice things without worrying about scum trying to steal them from us.

Wild Weasel,

Hey I've been to your website and it's very informative. Hopefully I can give you some help here.

As far as securing your equipment goes you really just have to get creative.
I've been a car audio installer for a while and I've seen just about everything you can imagine.

As far as the face plate goes, you cannot get a replacement faceplate for a deck, especially if it's hot. When you get your deck they ask you to register it with them. That way if someone takes you deck without the face plate, they of course can't get a new one for that deck (face plates have serial numbers on em and not ANY face plate will work with MOST after market decks).
This really does you no good at all though. (writing this for information purposes alone)

The best way I have seen to put a deck in and the way I use is as follows, but I warn you it is a little tricky and time consuming and your gonna have to get your meat hooks into some tight places.

There are a few ways you can attach your deck to your car.
First of all on the back of the decks there should be several threaded holes. The way I usually do this is to take a piece of steel (any metal really) and get some small bolts that take torx bit ends (the little start type connctors). Now the metal sometimes comes with the deck (thin crappy stuff.. could be cut easily) so I usually go out and get a small piece of sheet metal or steel. You can't have it too thick, but if you look at the size of the space for teh deck you'll soon find how thick is acceptable.

What your going to do is bolt these piece of steel to either the sides of the deck or the back of it (wherever the threaded holes are) and then to the dash brace (the metal bars that your dash bolt to).

You can also attach small pieces of metal to the deck and then loop a piece of steel wire thorugh it seven times and then around your dash brace (also good and slightly easier)

It's a bit ghetto but it works. Did this in a friends Civic and it's been broken into 3 times, the one thing that remained was his CD player because I installed it using the wire trick. I'd really like to see someone get in ther with a piar of cutters and get at that wire. Much less do it quickly while the alarm is going off.

Hopefuly this helps. I know it's not a good explanation but hopefuly you get a good idea of what I mean. If not let me know and I'll write something better up for you. Just at work at the moment. If you wantI can also make you diagrams etc.

Hope this helps ya out weasel

Take care

just have it so it slides back deeper into the dash and a metal plate slides down in front of the DIN. Chances are they won't get it out.... but if they know it's in there they will bust your @!#$ up bad trying

That'd be cool.

My suggestion, Weasel, is to save your money. I guarantee if you spend 1500$+ on a headunit, you will kick yourself in the ass in the future. No doubt.

Well, having the "password" is nice, but judging by the mods in his profile... there isn't much i'd want... except the explosives...

lol I'd steal the explosives too. That'd be a hell of a setup just gettin the password thing going though, I'd steal that too
