A buddy of mine is getting ready for battle of the boom this year, its a local SPL competion and show.
He just bought 3 Audiobahn AW1205N 12" Ultra High Excursion subs for his ford explorer. He is running 3 2000Watt mono block amps @ 2 ohms, each about 1000watt rms.
My curosity is, whats the differance between Natural Excursion and High excursion subs?
I know what excursion is, but how does that translate to SPL between the 2 styles?
Is there an actual differance or is it just for looks?
high excursion subs move more air, the foam surround on the subs is thicker and wider, thus, making the sub come out more, moving more air.
High excursion subs aren't necessarily louder than subs with smaller Xmax.
For example I'll use my 18" stroker - it has average xmax (0.75" each way), yet it is much louder than the vast majority of subs produced, even 18s with way more excursion. Why this is, I can only speculate, but it just is. When it comes to SPL, Xmax isn't everything.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
yeah i was wondering this myself, i always thought that .. surface area x the distance the cone travelled would push more air therefore creating more pressure...but then im lookin at some of the SPL subs out there and they have like...10 mm xmaxs and stuff...then i see some subs the same size with like ... 18 or something and they arnt as loud ... really makes no sence to me but whatever

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.
