problem with set up
Monday, February 27, 2006 7:31 PM
ok here is whats going on. i have a line output converter hooked up to, the front door speakers, the rear speakers for a 4 channel alpine amp, and then another one for the sub. the idea here is to allow me to have my stereo in untill i can afford the headunit i want. well the problem is, i am pretty sure i blew one of my 6x9's, with the volume on the amp all the way down. before this the stereo was turned up, not by my inexperianced self, but a freind of mine with more knowlege than i and it sounded supurb. but now, front and rear are distorted not even 1/2 way up on the volume on the headunit(stocker) and the volume on the amp all the way down. PLEASE HELP! we didnt disconnect anything durring this, so i am just very confused. we were both pretty frustrated, and decided to pack it up for tonight and sleep on it. so if anyone could help me i would be so greatfull. thanks and have a good night

maybe turn the volume on the amp back up to where he had it before? not enough power causes distortion, too much power causes distortion and blowage. That's all I can think of, unless you have a spare 6x9 sitting around (I always have spare speakers sittin around for testing purposes) to test if they are blown or not, you'd have to try other methods to narrow down the possibilities

there is no volume on an amp only a gain control. Sounds like improper adjustment and set-up.

disconect your 6x9's one at a time. if you pull one out and it sounds like the distortion is gone, then you know that one is probably your problem.

personally, it sounds like you have conflicting frequencies. i had that happen to me before, it just sounded like crap. i amped my fronts, hauled out my rears, and wired an equalizer into my trunk for a crossover.

go slow and do one thing at a time, that is what troubleshooting is about.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

sorry for the confusion, when i said volume on the amp, i ment the gain. and its not just the rears that have the distortion, its all of them. i was wondering if the line output converters could be my problem? i was debating on just saying screw it, and just breaking down and getting a headunit. well the car is on hold for now, and mike is gonna come over again and we are gonna dig into it and see what we can find. anything that we can find out of the ordinary i will post up and see what the stereo gods think. thanks for the help thus far

Calvin - too little power DOES NOT CAUSE DISTORTION!!!

Z24Baller - I can almost bet your gains are off. They have to match the voltage on the line level converters. Read my sticky on how to set your gain.
