Well, yesterday I went out and bought a replacement deck for my system, but to get it outta me, I also went down to the pawn shop and bought a cheap cobra radar detector (11 band) for $75. Now, seeing as how I wanted a bigger amp, went over to MJ audio and priced out an 800 watt X-treme Mono amp (by directed audio) and threw that in my car after taking out the kenwood amp. Stupid me, I cranked up the bass boost, and set the gain to where the subs stop getting louder (at about 3/4 full) and turned up the x-over. Turned on the stereo, and cranked it. Got about 1 minute of bass out of the 10" kenwoods and all of a sudden they stopped. Popped the trunk, smelled nothing but burning voice coil. I slapped myself in the head a few times, and went over to the pawn shop again to get my dream subs: the 12" Rockbox subs in a plexiglass & ported enclosure. So... now heres my system
Same old cheap jensen deck (what a surprise, thats what's next to be upgraded though)
800 watt mono amp by Directed Audio (240w RMS)
800 to 1000 watt 12" rockbox subs in plexiglass/ported enclosure.
Of course there's more to it, like the wiring, interior speakers, but these are the things that have changed in the recent days. The tuning for the rockbox is soooooooo much different than the kenwoods, for the frequency sweep, my ears pop and the bass hits really hard about halfway through, whereas the kenwoods would hit me right at the end of it. one problem that you had was the bass boost,
thats bad very bad... sounds like you had a problem with your gain
maybe someone else could help you on this more then i can though

You should need no more than +6 DB of bass boost on ANY system.
And yeah....the gain was probably way too high.....assuming the jensen has 2 volt pre-outs. 1/2 way is probably about max...maybe a touch more.

actually, turns out the kenwoods didnt blow! the lead wires snapped off, they work now after taking them out and repairing the lead wires. never again will I run them on so much power. Tryin to sell them now. Thx for the tips on the gain, I took out the amps and subs and readjusted it after finding the voltage on the jensen preouts. dont think I got it right yet.
For the guy who said I have a cool pawn shop, not really... He's selling a Precision Power 1600w amp for $995.00, 15" Orion subs (2500w) for $345.00 each, New kicker subs for $12 less than brand new ($399), even while they were used. They have a small section for car audio though, which is pretty cool I admit. Not many have it.
And finally, after my trip up to Regina today, I bought some new speakers to replace the stock ones. I got brand new Rockford Punch 3 1/2" front speakers for $91, and some Blaupunkt 6.5" speakers for $25 at... Walmart?? They work fine, and they've got the trippy see-through cone O.o
I found the 5 1/4" "speakers" in the front like the website I found listed. They're actually passive radiators, thinkin about replacing them with 5 1/4" midbass speakers, and getting some better rear speakers that actually fit (rear speakers are 7", the 6.5" speakers were only big enough to fit ONE of the 4 screws in it.
The only other speakers I found that actually fit are the subs from my Philips home stereo, which are big enough to fit all 4 screws, BUT they're way too deep to fit in the original speaker hole because they hit the white bars in the trunk, I'll see if I can post a pic tomorrow of the crossbar. Thinkin about cutting them off where the speakers start, but I dont know if they're crucial to the car or trunk, so I wont until I get a definite answer.
i had the same thing happen to my kenwoods, i think they actually burnt off. Wasn't pretty and never worked the same again
leadwires burnt off? wow... I thought they'd use at least a good wire that'll handle the wattage of the sub... then again, I also thought they'd be able to handle the excursion...
