Boss Audio GT2500D Mono Amp
Sunday, February 19, 2006 10:30 AM
I'm looking to upgrade my amp from my Kenwood-9102D which has 500 watts RMS@4ohms to this amp. I want something roughly around 900-1000 watts RMS to get the most out of my Alpine Type-Rs. Is THIS a quality amp to power the subs? I don't want to break the bank with this upgrade. Thx for your help guys!

BOSS is complete and utter garbage.

*NO it will not output that type of power. I place that type of gear in the ranks of jensen, Pyle, Volfenhag etc.

Quote Master Yoda "Quality mmmmmm it is not." If you want something halfway decent, get a Hifoniks BX1505d. Remember, to do things right usually costs $.

Agreed, that amp would be a downgrade from what you have now.

2500 watts Max Power is the millisecond when it gets struck by lightning before frying to death.

As everyone suggests, look elsewhere.

Lanman, the 1505D has the same RMS @4ohms as my current amp, any recommendations for something around the 900-1000watt range @4ohms?

so you bought some nice solid, great sounding, hard hitting type-r's and powered them with a KENWOOD amp and think you upgrading to a BOSS amp? im disapointed man those subs deserve much better, look into DEI or Cadence, or hifonics and check ebay and ikesound for factory refurbs if ur looking to save some cash and get a nice solid amp!

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

You can run your two dual 4 ohm subs at 1 ohm. That's why I mentioned the hifoniks amp.

Look into a company called Ultimate. They have some fantastic monoblock amps. (coming from personal experience)

Lanman, at 1ohm, the hifoniks amp runs at 1500 watts. The Type-Rs are 500 RMS each, will the amp over power the subs? Running 750 to each? Or can the Type-Rs handle that much power?

BlackyK, as long as you're not clipping, you should be able to power those subs no problem.

Good find man, I'll keep an eye on that auction. So 1100 watts @1ohms won't blow the subs? I guess from what I've heard that the Type-Rs can be pushed beyond their stated power ratings? How true is that?

Oh, and what does clipping mean?

A clipped signal is one that extends pass the peak or valley of the wave. Basically, not a clean signal, which causes heat and cooked coils.

Go to www.ikesound.com and get either a Directed amp or a Hifonics amp. I've got a 1200 watt RMS at 1 ohm Brutus Hifonics amp, and man does it ever pound my 2 12" JL 12w6v2's. Hifonics makes a quality amp, and they are outrageously priced. This is the new model of the Hifonics that would power your subs nicely: BXi 1206D I believe the older model is BX1205D if I remember correctly. That's the one I have. Whatever you do, don't skimp on the amp.
