1. how much better will a 5 1/4 sound over a 4 inch comp?
2. why is ther eso much confusion around adapters and why do msot audio shops seem hesitatn to install anything that isnt stock size?

Why not do a 6 1/2 inch component? Usually the bigger the speaker, the more power handling, and the better mid-bass you get. Good audio shops won't have a problem doing something non-stock size. Barf Buy/Circuit Idiot have no idea what's going on. Why not do the install yourself?

Don't blame the store, blame the installers. there's a few there that I would let do pretty much any work on my car, and others that I wouldn't let near it.... Anyway, 5 1/4 should be a decent improvement, and not hard to make fit. 6 1/2 is prolly a little bit more of a challenge, but still do-able, and you'll get more midbass as was said above. Some advice, don't buy the premade metra, possibly scosche, adapters for component speakers. They say they're made for cavalier/sunfires, but they angle up and make your speaker press up against the door panel. cut out some of your own from some mdf or something.

most companies dont charge a ton of money for installing speakers so the diffrence between dropping in a plastic adapter versu 15 minutes spend making one could mean the diffrence between profit and losing money.

as for the speaker. the 5.25 will be able to play more music (more frequencies) then the 4" can. this is in general terms.
