Alpine Type-R Question???
Tuesday, February 14, 2006 8:44 AM
It's been a while since I was in electricity in high school... haha

I have twin 12" Alpine Type-R's that I will be putting in a custom box in the trunk. My question is this, I will be using an amp that is stable at 2 ohms. I doubt I can hook up a pair of subs that are 4ohm+4ohm in a way to make them 2ohm, but what would be the best way to hook them up and get them to their lowest resistance to get the most power from the amp? (This amp is 300WRMS @ 4ohm and 600WRMS @ 2ohm and the Type-R's are 500WRMS.)

If that doesn't make sense, I'll try to explain further, but someone should follow what I am saying...

put the two type r's in parallel, then wire them together in series. it'll give you a 4 ohm load. That's the best you're going to do with those subs/amp.

Thanks for the quick reply... DTP was kind enough to send his opinion (in Paint shop, no less)... Is this a diagram of what you mean?

Or is this what you mean? (I had to use PS since Paul did... lol)

And running 300WRMS to them will be fine for me so I won't have a chance of blowing them even with the gain at 100% (which it wont be). Thanks for the help!

First one will give you an 8 ohm load.

Second one would cook your amp.

that's what you want.

First one will give you an 16 ohm load.

Second one would cook your amp.

that's what you want.

lol... Thanks.

Here's the next question. I have heard that if you invert one amp, you have to reverse the polarity so that the cone moves in unison with the other. Otherwise, the waves will at least partially cancel. This makes sense to me, but some people are telling me that isn't right. Which is the RIGHT way?

i know what you're saying, but this won't matter for you. Just wire it up like i showed, and you'll be golden. Cancellation and phase is usually when subs are facing each other.

Ok, but the sub box has them using the same airspace... Still doesnt matter? Again, thanks for all the help.

Still doesn't matter brother. I'm going to have 4 woofers all sharing the same airspace.

i have a mrd 500 alpine for sale if you want it?

This isn't a "for sale" thread. This is a "how do I wire up my woofers" thread. Second, the mrd-500 is a 2 ohm stable amp, he's gotta run 4 or 1.

First off the amp is 4 and 2ohm stable and I dont care what thread this is I thought that I would tell him I had a amp for sale STATE YOUR OWN MESSAGE AND MIND YOUR BUSINESS ABOUT OTHERS I dont crap on what you say

Do you know what retail is on these puppies??? lol My money is allocated to other things for now.

And Cav2nv, I appreciate the offer, but I'm keeping all of my parts as much in unison as possible. No mix-matching amps anymore for me...

300 will sound fine brother. At a later date you can always upgrade.

You know what, looking at that, he would have cooked 2 coils if he wired + and - of the same coil together.

Yeah, he drew it different than how he explained it.... I think it was just a goof on his part...

is there a way to wire 4-4 ohm coils to run between 2 and 4 ohms?

4 4 ohm coils or 4 4ohm subs? if you look at the picture i put up that's for 4 ohms. For 4 dual 4 ohm subs you can have it run 2 ohm.
