I put in a 200 amp alternator, did the big 3 with 4 gauge wire, and put in an optima red top. I have 2 Alpine MRD-M605 amps pushing 2 12" eclipse aluminum. all together running about 1200 watts rms and 1800 peak. My lights still dim. what else can I do?
get a cap, it will help in the short period of time that it takes your battery and alt to respond to the increased current draw. you can also increase your idle if you are mainly getting dimming lights while stopped.

im getting dimming while im driving. even at 3000 rpms
Re-do your ground or something. There is no way those amps are pulling that much current. figure at 400w rms each they might be pulling 30-40 amps max so 80 amp max. Theres no way you should be diming. Check your grounds and recheck your big 3.
Jeremy
your lights get dim over time or just pulse a little with the bass?

somethings not right when im at idle with my 180 amp alternator and 100 amps of current from my amp the volts drop down to 11 volt's but but lights don't dimm.
re ground your amp's
a cap should help, you can get a 2.4F digital Cap for about $60 on eBay, or at least I did a year or so ago

Your lights should not be dimming at 3000 rpms with that alternator. What kind of alternator is it?

Do you have a deep cycle battery?
You bought the WRONG battery....the Yellow top is for applications like yours....it cost about $150 at any real auto store...
why do people focus on the battery? Almost all of your power when the car is running comes from your Alt. you only need to worry about the battery to start your car and to run stuff when the car is off.

a Deep cycle battery is for running electronics with your vehicle OFF. it is made to be discharged almost completely and recharged. There won't be much difference between a deep cycle and a starter battery with the car on.

It's possible that you got a bad alternator.
I'd try to contact the mfg.

I contacted them today and he said that he would look into it.
I just wanted to let everybody know that they sent me the wrong alternator. I just got my replacement from them with a call back tag to send the other one back. Now it is much better. They have extremely fast shipping and had no problem sending me the right one without even getting the old one back. the price was really good too.
Awesome. Glad it all worked out.
