imjust wondering the proper way to tune an amp. i read somewhere you use a voltmeter. but not sure how or what you do. any suggestions???
take the square root of your amp wattage times ohms.
for example, if you have a 600 watt amp at 2 ohm...
square root(600*2)
That'll give you the voltage in AC
Adjust your gain so your speaker outs read that voltage with a 0 db sine wave.
If you're doing subs, usually the lower notes put out the most voltage.

What I did with zeetwankyfo's car is a sweep from 30 hz to 80 hz, have his xover set to 80 hertz, and have him play the sweep and adjust accordingly. BIG difference in clarity, and no more burnt coils.
Lanman....the for the wattage is it just like...max or rms that ud take and multiply by the ohms and take the square root of?

yeah. and should i just keep al eq's off on head unit and turn the bass boost off on my amp. put in a 30-80hz sweep (put it on repeat) hook my volt meter to my sub outputs,set the freq. to about 80hz and then turn up my gain accordingly.????
wattage is RMS.
Definitely turn off any equalizers or bass enhancers when you're doing your amps. Once you get it set, adjust your equalizers and what not, then double check your voltages.

ok, well i am still kinda learning all of this stuff, to make sure i got this correct, you have the sub unhooked? then test with the meter off of the rcas for the sub on the amp??? and also i didnt see a 30-80 wave on there by name. there were alot broader ranges tho... does that matter??? thank you very much in advance.
no. you test the sub outputs. or the speaker outputs. and you turn all the equalizers off. and yes you can use a braoader range.
now i did the inverse of this to find out how much power my amp is putting out, and total is 2200w rms, BUT how do i measure how much distortion it has at that load?

you can't measure your amplifiers power output using a plain ol' DMM. how did you measure it exactly?
