Thursday, February 02, 2006 4:26 PM
I am running two JL Audio W3 12's in my cav....at high volumes they cut out...i am running a soundstream lil wonder 4 channel amp..not sure of the wattage on it was told any where from 400-500 watts..are the subs just under powered

I was just wondering if someone could help me out..

Underpowering won't make them cut out, clipping might. Especially if you're doing high volumes.

It's probably your amp cutting out

stop using a 4 channel amp go to a mono

It won't hurt anything to use a 4 channel amp for subs. I'm with lash - some amps have clipping protection. Check your gains, bass boost, etc...

gains turn town to 1/4....bass boost is off and turn down a good bit...sub control is down to a 1/4 of the way...i can get a little more out but still cut out...amp is not going into protection and i cant tell if they are clipping or not...i am going to go with a ported box to help with temps., i saw someone post something about that...i dont know. maybe try more power but dont see where it will help...

thanks guys for all your help

do you have the amp bridged to two channels. and your subs are a dual voice coil 4 ohm too? that is the dilemma.

that is a good point. most 4 channel amps will run 4 ohms stereo, not bridged. try this: run each coil to a channel on the amp, see if that helps at all.

If the amp is putting out a stereo signal...this might not be a good idea. I would suggest running a mono signal to the amp.

so...on my amp..if i bridge both channels i switch the amp into mono. i should be all right. do i just get two Y-connectors to do this correctly.

I kept blowing my inline fuse on the power wire when I cranked my old setup to a certain volume. Think it was the sub though, but I have no clue, amp worked fine when put on my 6x9's.

Look into Resonant Enginering SE series. They sound IDENTICAL to W6v2's...and cost MUCH less. See the link in my sig.

So you have heard both subs in the same car, and your RTA eardrums heard the EXACT same sound? WOW!

Actually, check out the SPL ELF series, they're identical to the JL W6 and cost WAY less.

Please. They are the same. The specs are even alomost identical. If you'd actually hear one you'd probably agree.

i was having a problem like this with my stereo before. do you have a high pass filter on your front speaker? how about a low pass on your sub?

if not, install this first before you do anything else.

a proper crossover will cure most dilemas like this.

if you want an easy way to do this, get an eq. when i installed me equalizer, it got rid of the problem for me.

at high volumes, i wasnt getting enough bass, and a little bit of distortion too from the front speakers. i amped my fronts with 2 of the chanels, and ran the sub with the other 2 chanels (DVC sub).

my eq is a remote mount, in the trunk right beside my amp. i ran the stereo signal back from the head to the eq input. the subwoofer out then to ch 1 and 2 of the amp to power each coil of the sub. then the front output of the eq to ch 3 and 4 to power my fronts off the amp.

one of the local stereo shops around here was trying to tell me it was my power wire to my amp, that 10 AWG wasn't enough and that i needed 8 AWG. its only a 240W amp, so it only draws 20 Amps of power (peak).

so like i said, put in an eq or a crossover. i would suggest the eq because it is adjustable incase you swap out a component, you dont have to replace your crossover.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

battery could not be giving enough power to the amp
