(searched) Can sub level control cause distortion?
Wednesday, January 18, 2006 12:45 PM
Okay, here's my situation, and I'm not sure if I'm doing any harm (I doubt it, bit I don't know!):

I have a pioneer DEH-P6700MP, it puts out 50W max, but I'm using the preouts for my sub, so it's probably nowhere near.
-Apline MRP-T220, it's stable for 2 or 4 ohms per channel, 4 bridged. It's 180MAX, 130RMS(70/Channel)
-Kicker 10" 05CVR104 it's 600MAX, 300RMS
Sub is in a sealed enclosure, but that's not important.

I have the gain set to NOM, because when I tried to set it to the right amount, my multimeter wasn't working and I've yet to get a new one.

I'm just wandering if adjusting the sub level, which goes from 0 to 6, would cause distortion, and if it does, would my equipment be in any threat from it?

yea you can fry the coil on the sub the gain control is kinda like a valom control for your sub.

No, not gain.

I'm talking about an option on the head unit, you press sub on it and it gives lets you adjust how high the sub level is.

(And a lot of people are going to get ipssed at you for calling gain a volume control )

when u put the sw level on ur headunit up i think it causes distortion....when i listen and i have that set down it sounds quite a bit clearer than if its up at a +12dB level lol, just set it to where its at the same level as ur music is playing so that it matchs and ull be fine

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

LOL

the sw level control is also called sw gain control on some head unit's since it puts out more volt's to the sw out.

the one on my radio is set to 0 (-6 to +6) thsts where i set my gain's on the amp's and if i turn it up to +1 the amp start's to clip. so like i said you can fry the coils on your sub, if i was you i would upgrade the amp since it olny puts out 130 x1 and get a ported box you would like the sound alot better.

check out this amp

since your subs dual 4-ohm's it will give your sub 400 watt's and in a ported box around 1.75 cubes it will sound alot better. then get a set of 61/2 comp. for your doors and put the alpine amp on them.

Wow that's an awesome price for a sub, I think I may buy it Thanks a lot

One question though. Is Directed a good brand?

directed is dei (directed electronics inc), they make ppi, viper, orion so yea they are a good brand

What about equalizer, can turning up the equalizer values cause distortion on a tuned amp?

Turning up the voltage going to the amp at any point in the line can cause distortion. Turning up the volume, sub boost, equalizer, etc. raises the voltage on the RCAs. The amplifier amplifys this voltage to go to the subs. Once the amp has reached it's limit, it produces a square wave instead of the normal curved sine wave it normally sends to the subs when tuned correctly. This is called a square wave or "clipping" which produces distorted sound and kills speakers.

Hope that clears things up for you somewhat.

if you hear distortion, then turn the stuff down.

it all really depends on what the function does. is it a gain type level setter, or a volume type level setting.

or it might even just boost a certain frequency range.

As Wysiwig said, check the instructions. Some of them boost +12db or whatever @ 40 hz or whatever, just a certain frequency.
