whoaa blew 2 type r's in one shot!
Sunday, January 22, 2006 3:49 PM
well i blew 2 new 12" type r's today tuning them. had them in a sealed box and powered by a kenwood x811d amp. they were 4ohm+4ohm running at 1 ohm to the monoblock amp. now what do i do?
go with a solar barric? or type x? i'm lost on what to get, my amp runs 1016w rms at 1 ohm so i have alot of options
the amp will draw a max of 55amps of currrent from the battery, and when i blew the 2 subs i was only drawing 20amps so i wasnt even running 1/2 power, which is insane with all the gains turned down

what should i do???!!!

Huh. You blew 2 12's off of 500 watts RMS each in a sealed box with the gains all the way down.

Something has got to be wrong with your set-up.

they were in a sealed box, if that makes any difference, the gains werent conpletely down, i guess they were somewhere in the middle. there was no clipping or anything, but i know that i was pushing there max output, i dont know exactly how the amp worked with the 2 but was told that the amp could put out as high as 2200w which is believeable concidering the way they pounded till crackle crackle!!

something has gotta be wrong there I ran 2 Type R 10s at 1500RMS @ 1ohm and they never fried...I did that for about 2weeks until I got the 3rd one

if it ain't broke...MAKE IT GO FASTER

jesus are u sure that the amp is 1 ohm stable? and if u knew that why the hell would u hook up two type rs to a 2200w+ amp? wtf lol

yea i'm sure that its one ohm stable the specs says it is, i dont know what happened, to be honest, but now i have to findsomething that can take the power,... a type x maybe?

55 amps of current x 12 volts = 660 watts. Even at 14 volts it's 770 watts, and that's only if the amp were magically 100% power efficient, which none are. You're RMS is probably somewhere around 300 watts.

My guess is the setup was not tuned correctly, and your subs were killed by distortion.

my voltage was running at 14.1v at 25amps

ok here are the amp specs
rms power output (+b=14.4 V CEA-2006)
(4Ω (1.0% THD+N) 533w
(2Ω (1.0% THD+N) 919w
(1Ω (1.0% THD+N) 1016w
Dynamic Power(+b=14.4, CEA-2006) 566w
current consumption (+b=12.0V 100hz, 10% THD 4Ω 55A

I know that you can run 2 dual 4ohm type r's @ 1ohm but you shouldn't unless you are running a proper amplifier that will handle a 1ohm load, and have 1/0 awg wire with a cap

i guess that makes sense now you say that i was turning up the gains via hu and voltage max is 5.0v so that could be.....

so how do i get around distortion??

how exactly did you measure the amperage draw?

amperage draw is built into the amp, along with other monitoring devices like voltage, amp temperature, etc..

it is a eXcelon X811d, has a voltage meter built in, and if linked to a eXcelon deck will display on the hu.

Dude, next time try breaking them in first instead of just breaking them. So are they locked up or what?

Your problem could be the sealed box, but NOT how you might think.

Sealed boxes are inefficient, so when your playing @ low volumes, and your not really getting anything, but the sub is trying to work itself, you are heating the danm thing up, THEN when you give it a good crank, and suddenly blast it, DING, there goes your sub, no matter how good it is. I have seen R's take rediculous amounts of power while being burped, so the sub is not the issue here. User error must be at play, (live and let learn lol).

so if i had them in a ported box they would have pounded, crazy? and no blown speakers/?? i could understand that, it was so tight that when i pushed the speaker down it took like 10 sec for it to come back to resting

I still think distortion killed it.

Selaed box or not.....it shouldn't have blown with that amount of power.

What were the bass setting on your deck at? and be honest...lol.

bass setting was at 0
sub-w out controll was at +11 goes to +16
gain on the amp was at 50%
low pass filter was at 80hz on the amp

sub out control is too high!!!!

should have it been set to 0? goes from -16 to 0 to +16
