Head Unit Powering Down...
Sunday, January 15, 2006 9:58 AM
Just installed a new head unit in my car the other day in my car for the first time, what i did was just snip the wires at the end of the factory harness and solder them with the wires from the harness for the new stereo. Problem is when i turn it up loud, on the occasinal song the head unit powers down and turns back on, my question is the stock wiring ground and or 12v constant connection not large enough to supplie the right amount of power? I did a search on here and online, do I just need to run a direct fused connection to the battery and leave the stock ground and the stock 12v switch? Thanks.

thats realy weired...

are you 100% sure you wired everything correctly?

there shouldnt be a problem with it not getting enough power...though i wonder if your head unit is going into some kinda of thermal protection.

read up on your deck and see if it has something like that equiped. cause maybe it is getting too much voltage, soldering in a resistor in series would fix that problem.

Well the headunit had an extra grounding wire on its harness, but I have never had to ground a head unit any extra method. It happens when the song has good bass, and i turn it up loud, shuts off... Head unit is Alpine CDA 9853.

Why is everyone cutting the factory harnesses all of the sudden? You would have been better off going to walmart and spending 5$ to do it right. Just my opinion. You may want to check that you got all of the wires correct, it also may just be the unit.

the extra ground may just be for an auxillary unit or something. or it may be incase you are getting ground loop noise.

david is right, if you would have used the harness, you could have swaped units with someone near you and just seen if it did it in someone elses car too.

when i work next, i'll ask my boss for his opinion, he designed my system.

I have the same problem, same CD player - just installed some new 4x6's today and when I turn it up - it shuts off. I think it protects the speakers from distorting. I took off the Makers Mix opition and it seems to be ok now - I think it was just giving my system too much power with that on.

well the head unit doesn't know what speakers you have hooked up. you could have 25 watt RMS units, or 200 watt RMS units. there's no way the head unit would know that. all it senses is a load on it's outputs.
it does sound like thermal protection. if it's a heavy bass song and you crank it, the internal amp has to work harder, pulling more current and generating more heat.
I know my '02 Z had very little ventilation room for my Clarion HU, but I haven't had any issues so far. just REALLY warm CD's.
the best way to test it, would be to pull the HU out of the dash, and run the same song. see if it cuts out. if it doesn't, then you are looking at a thermal issue. if it does, I'd return the HU for a new one.

did you guys run the power lead to the battery? my buddy had to do that in his beretta and his 99 dually cause it would shut down when turned up? ran the power lead to the battery and no more issues. actually sounds really great to.

My ex-g/f had this same problem in her Prelude. The power wire was too small to provide ample current and would shut off.

She was f'n deaf tho... so she would crank it WAY too loud.. but anyway... she's an EX for a reason...

Run a new wire... instead of to the factory power wire.... go straight to the battery, with a good size wire and a 15 or 20 amp fuse. I'm almost CERTAIN it'll solve your problem.
