Speedometer dances with music
Saturday, January 14, 2006 5:16 PM
I installed a new deck because my car didn't even have a factory radio when I got it. After installing it I noticed the speedometer wasen't working. The speedometer needle didn't move up at all at low volume, so I tried turning up the volume and the speedometer started to jump at the same time the bass was thumping. When I shut off my cd player the speedometer would start to show me the correct speed I was traveling, then when I turn it back on it dances again.
Before I go trouble shoot the problem I was just wondering if anyone had this problem before and found a solution. I did a search on the forums but didn't find an answer. Do the speaker wires have any connection with the speedometer? Could bad wiring be the cause of it? Any help would be great.
Thanks!

check your grounds and your power wires. or maybe you're just tapping your foot with the music while you drive... I don't know why it wouldn't work unless your stereo is on, normaly it would stop working when you turn it on if it was a problem with one of your speakers grounding out..

What car, what year, etc. Your registry is totally useless blank

It sounds like you've connected the VSS wire (green/black I think?) to the aftermarket radio... but it only works with the stock radio for Speed Controlled Volume feature on 95-99 cars. If you hooked it up to the radio outputs, that would cause this.

Crap, that's the wire that was confusing me. I'll have to check it out and see if that is the problem.

Thanks

Yup. Disconnect it (from whatever you've connected it to) and I'm pretty certain that will solve your problem.

It was actually a green/white wire that I had to disconnect. The speedometer works like it should now.

But now where do I hook up my right front (-) wire? That was the only wire that came close to dark green. I'm guessing I'm going to have to wire in a whole new wire.

Did anyone have to do this when they installed an aftermarket deck?

the colors don't necessarily have to match up. I'd be willing to bet that if u look at the diagram for the harness, and the diagram for the deck, there will be some differences. Just look at those to handy peices of information, and you should be able to find the color of the wire your looking for.
