I need to split the wire coming from my batery into two twelve gauge wires. I was thinking about running an 8 gauge wire from my battery with a 40 amp fuse and splitting it into the two twelve gauge wires with 20 amp fuses. Will this work? Are there any rules to go by?

i'd go with a 4 ga wire and 8 ga from the distribution, but thats just me.
