I just put a new cd player into my wife's 02 Sunfire. That was a pain. The hardest part was trying to figure out how to get the damn thing to stay in the mounting bracket without coming out. Then I went ahead and cut out the factory plug and wired everything direct.
That's fun, but I personally wouldn't have cut the factory harness.
you did it the hard way.....buy the 10 dollar harness and match colors
give th guy credit...its his first mod. congrats man
i cut my harness in my 00 cav, no one around here had the adapter cept walmarts $50 one that keepos the door chimes, only cost me $1.50 for a roll of tape
I also... personally wouldn't have used tape. But good job on the install, most just pay the retailers to do it.
i would just bought the 6 dollar wiring harness. you can find them at any audio store, walmarts, radioshack around.
Radioshack doesn't sell car harnesses. Hasn't for about 5 years. Still got calls every day asking for em when I worked there though.

Couldn't find a harness. I did the same thing on my Tacoma a couple years ago.
02 right? door chime I believe, so uh either relocate factory radio to back or I use the GMRC-01 works well too.. never cut a harness, i used to install and i hate havin to fix or work on cars with cut harnesses, wow, other than that congrats,

the 70-2003 allows you to hook up the radio, but lose the chimes, BIG DEAL, you don't need em unless your a bonehead that cannot remember to turn the lights off.

^^^^^ ha i cut the dam harness out and sold the deck to a chick at work a week later.
ive changed the deck twice in about half an hour.
i ran new power, ground, and speaker wires( four channel amp
) cause lets face it the factory wiring in our cars suck crap ! ! !
Whats up people?
how do you guys make the hu turn on on acc
"Sunfire got stolen, all i have is the J to remember it by"
^^^^^^^ i grabbed a power line from the power window switches
Whats up people?
Tape...eep, why do people still do things the hard way
, just use cheap crimp connectors if your gonna go that route, much cleaner and for like a 1.50 you can get a whole bag of them and never have to worry about shorts or the evil tape leftovers, OR you can get a soldering iron and some heat shrink solder all the wires and heat shrink them, which is the way i install all my harness kits and extra wiring, i've personally pulled 3 head units out where someone taped them together and at this point i just disconnect the hu and yank the harness loose, much easier that way
.
congrats on the install, but i gotta agree with the harness statement, makes life easier, nothin wrong with wiring direct though, and i can deffinatly understand runing new wires. My alpine flashes and looses power at anything over 20. stock cavy wiring sucks
J~
congrats on the install, but what you going to do if u wanna sell the car now? you have to sell with that deck. mines harnessed so i can swap in the factory tape deck if i want.
plus, do all yourselves a favour and install your decks properly. go hit up an automotive store and get yourselves some heat shrink tubing. put the heat shrink on one of the wires, solder the connection, then take a lighter to the heat shrink. thats the best way to do it. crimps are a hack way to do it. but, do all yourselves a favour and get a rosin (flux) core solder. i accidently didnt at first and had to do the girlfriends car with crimps after i got so frustrated the wire wasnt taking the solder.
whitegoose is correct.
DO NOT CUT.
DO NOT USE TAPE.
USE A CHEAP HARNESS. ask for the harness to a 01 tracker. it works PERFECT.
HEATSHRINK, and SOLDER!!! its very very easy, and takes many future possible problems out of the picture. ive installed 5 jbodies so far myself, and if anyone has questinos about a jbody or any car, let me know, id be happy to help.

Ya newer GM cars need that damn RC01 bypass for the door chimes. YOu can use any Cav/Sunfire harness, but just get your acc. from another source. And I personally don't like to use crimps because they can come off. At work we use tape (which doesn't look the cleanest) but we sodder every wire and tape them. THe wire will never come lose.
GM Databus adapter
I found it cheaper at Circuit City. I have this with my Clarion HU, and have had no problems. It was very simple to figure out, and I kept my door chimes. It also does the switched +12V you need, and does the "stereo doesn't turn off until you open the door" thing.
Desert Tuners
“When you come across a big kettle of crazy, it’s best not to stir it.”
Not a big deal to cut the wires... but only taping the bare wire isn't recommended.
I have only installed a few thousand stereos, if you can't find a harness adapter then cut away, I use crimp quick connectors with heat shrink shields.
About a week ago I did a 96 dodge conversion van, someone stole his 1985 SuperTuner 1 and cut the factory plug off.
The best part was this van had a amplifier from the factory, talk about a fun job...
Try running speaker wires that don't match from the speakers to the reciever, and then power wires that weren't even close to the diagram for the vehicle.
GJ with the stereo install, now, take it out and protect those connections a little better.
