ok...just so you know i have installed a lot of cd players in cars in the past and ive never run into this problem before. but since ive never written in this forum, i might sound like a newb trying to explain this.
ok...when i stated the install i hooked up all the wires and tried it out. well when i turned on the car i turned the radio on and everything worked perfectly fine. then i wanted to make sure that the memory was working, so i turned the car off (radio turned off with it). and then let the car sit for 20 sec before turning it back on. well when i turned it back on, the radio was reset.. so i went back and checked all the wiring again and then tried it again. this time the memory works fine, but the radio wont shut off when i turn the car off. the power just stays with the radio. well after a long time of checking the wiring, i am completely stumped and am asking you guys for your help.

Good news - you're not crazy. There are no accessory/ignition wires running to the harness of the factory deck - all power wires running to the factory radio are constant 12v, which is why your radio stays on with the key off.
There are two ways in which you can get a switched 12v source in our cars - splice into the brown wire in the driver's side kick panel

or run a fuse tap from the wiper fuse. I did the latter - it's easy and works well.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
thanks...that helps a ton.

Looks like the problem I may encounter in my girlfriend's 02 sunfire coupe... Is this why they sell the $99 wiring kit to install an aftermarket radio?

Is there any way around that, or does the above method solve that? Not sure which harness to use either, as they dont seem to sell a harness that is cheaper than the $99, for an 02 sunfire.. Possibly another newb question, not trying to hijack your thread .Kurt. ..
Read the sticky, it's there to help you. You can use the expensive adaptor to create a switched power wire, or just extend to ignition wire to your ignition column or a switched fuse on the fuse block.
