just wondering if component sets have to be ampified. i dont have a specific one picked out yet but im lookin at a mid range, tweeter and crossover most likely JL Audio.

JL Audio XR's are what I have. I like em. I have 2 sets up front. 1 Set in each door. 150RMS to each set, and they rock. If you go XR's Amp them for sure, if you go TRs you can do either. Not too much experience with the VRs.

i would say to start with a good 35 watts + of solid power with seps. not necessary of course, but will help you take full advantage.
